I'm pulling my hair out mate, wont be doing that again for a while.
I did have it all set up for firewire connection, but deleted it, in one last vain attempt, With Figment as Tutor, to try and get them to agree with each other, via a new patch lead (we thought it was the lead)
but no......
Now I'm back at square one and will have to set it up for fire wire again.... still, wasn't too stressfull at 5 this afternoon, so hopfully it will be back together shortly....

A crossover cable crosses the transmit and recieve pairs, enabling you to connect 2 PC's together without a hub.
Without a crossover cable if you try to directly connect 2PC's you wont even see the link light.

I think I am right in saying that you should be able to ping another computers IP address regardless of how the drives etc are shared?
All you should need to do is have a fixed ip address on each PC, go to a DOS window "run CMD" and ping the other IP address.
Maybe you got some sort of odd problem with one of the network cards in the pc/laptop?
At this stage after all the things you have gone through I would try another network card/PCMCIA card in the laptop and even try another cross over cable just to eliminate things.
Oh forgot to say make sure both computers can ping each other before you try browsing the network workgroup, if they can't ping each other there is no point trying to browse the network. When you could see the drive of one computer could both pc's ping each other then?
