getting grief from a guy at work who owns an ST170
#61
Hi Col
Speaking objectively again, I am a fan of the Focus. I've driven loads of them, and up until recently (before the ST and RS) the 2.0 Zetec ESP was the best of the bunch.
When we were looking round for a replacement for Mrs T-S's STI Type UK, we test drove an ST170. Now, the important thing here was that when all the manufacturers were getting a slagging off several years ago for cars being expensive in the UK -v- the EU they reduced the price of their cars. In the case of many they did it by decontenting them - in Ford's case one of the standard extras that became an option was the ESP package. The ST170 we drove didn't have ESP so apart from being gutless in a straight line (there is no way that this car gives out 170PS - 167 bhp, or if it does it has crap torque) it didn't go round corners either.
We finally settled on a Seat Leon Cupra which apart from being cheaper ran rings around the ST170 (we replaced it with a Cupra R last month which is even better ).
I'd go as far as saying a 2.0 Zetec ESP is a better car to drive than an ST170 non ESP, but value for money and performance wise the Cupra R stomps all over the ST170
ST170 - nah

Friend of mine, Kenny, has an ST170, and yes, it is slow off the mark, but he will give any scooby a run for its money once mo0ving, and he has proven it time and again! remember that the scooby isn't so hot in the higher gears! His tops out at 140 plus spare change, so never underestimate a car! Funny how you scooby owners never post about so called underpowered cars that manage to stick to your tails! And make your mind up... You rave on about the twisties, but when a car may have you in the bendy bits, you all shout get him on the straights!
(Aahhh... 3 weeks till evo 6!! Purrrrrrrr!)

do what i do when people say mine is better than yours.just shrug it off,
fit a decent kit on your car and ALWAYS park next to his,
when people look at both cars they like yours better, works for me,(parked next to another scoob )
mums, always think their own children are the best.
if he boasts about it, just says its just another focus,
it will take ages to notice its a 170
