It might be worth bearing in mind what you would do if confronted by an attacker; would you get out of the car with it in your hand?
If so, would that not make it clear to your potential attacker that you were going equipped to harm and put any chance of reasonable, non-physical confrontation out of the window?
Would the Police not see things that way as well? I.e. that you were prepared to use physical force from the outset of the incident?
Or would you stay in the vehicle with the torch/extinguisher close to hand until you could decide whether this person was prepared and about to use physical violence?
I think the former course of action could land you in serious trouble from the off, while the latter is more likely to see you get away from the incident and to the nearest Police station in one piece.
As an aside, I never stop so close to the vehicle in front that I can't pull out without reversing. I try and leave enough space so that if I'm shunted reasonably hard from behind (deliberately), I still have enough room (usually leave about 3m between me and the next vehicle).

friends sister married a frog 10 years ago. we went over for the wedding. he drove a golf TD (MKII) . Where the service book should go (in a little compartment just under the steering wheel) he kept a semi automatic pistol. apparently they suffered alot of car jackings in super market car parks - (this was in mont pellier). would he have used it - you could bet your bollocks to a barndance. only decent french person i have met.

Bravo & JJ I know just where you are coming from. I own a replica of something once used by a certain Mr Bond. Its totally harmless but if any ne'r do well decided to enter my property without invitation, I'd have no compunction about brandishing said item. I used to worry about this scenario until I had a conversation along these lines with a local copper. Seems they also own a rather large version of the same thing, they admitted to me that they'd definately use it no hesitaion .

IMHO
Since car alarms/immobilisers have advanced the ***** in the cars armour is it's owner and getting the keys from them is the way to go if you are a thieving scumbag.
I have said this before but anyway - I will defend my family and what is mine the best i can and would not hessiate to use force if provoked - under certain circumstances.
However
We should not have to, there should be more Police on the streets and fitting punishments for offenders. Custodial, hard labour min 7 years no parole.
Scum will continue to do this unless the right penalties are in place and the Police are on the streets to protect us - like what we pay our taxes for!

As for replica guns you had better hope that your robber has not got a real one or you will be in deep sh*t!
illegal firearms as so to get and the sort of organised scum gangs that knick cars could easily have one or more.
<soapbox mode on>
Still we all know that speeding is the main problem with todays society and we should all sleep safe knowing that our roads are safe from speeders - Oh thats right we cannot sleep safe because our streets are OK for muggers burglars, rapists and murders unless they go over the speed limit, besides how much money does catching a mugger generate - Not knocking the Police more our waste of space government <soapbox mode off>

Ian - this is not aimed at the Police - this is a governmental problem, low wages, low morale and low budgets do not make for a happy cop or help recruiting.
My Brother in law has just joined SO 19, he commutes from Southampton to London as he cannot afford to live anywhere near London. add 3 hours to an already long day, he will have to stay in London in B&B if he get called out on a shout if the trains have stopped running. He wanted to join SO 19 badly and is happy to put up with it and fair play.

Give me some credit, if said burglar was waving a gun real or not , in my face, I'd be rather silly if I then produced my toy wouldn't I ?

Apparition what i am saying really is if you threatened him with your replica first and he or another pulled a real gun and shot you you would be in deep sh*t would you not. I gave you enough credit not to threaten an already gun toting sh*tbag with a replica.
