Damian, you suatted 250s...??

You must have done competitions with lifts like that?

Si - if it's my £100 that's driving you on, i'd rather pay you *now* as long as you slow down a little! Everything seems possible at 21, but trust me, you don't wanna make it any worse, as it will only catch up with you with a vengeance later on in life, hard though that is to believe now....

Telboy,

A lot of people seem to think I am a powerlifter but I am a believer in the bigger the weight you lift the bigger the muscle will be.

As far as competition's go I am really poor at bench press (in comparison to my squat). I have always struggled with benching once I get to 3 plates.

Besides all that I like to go out at the weekend and get wrecked so that wouldn't do for any competition regime. lol!

Si,

Don't really do any deadlifts. But on the one offs when I have done I have done 210kg's. My P.B. is 220Kg.

When I was 18 I used to do deadlift every week and got to 220kg but then seemed to become very stale with it and could not progress further. Even now I can (I am now 31) still deadlift around that weight and so I just do bent over rows now.

250 is a massive squat. Nobody on SN has got close to that, that i'm aware of. Squatting more than your deadlift is also very unusual. How tall are you Damian (non-dating question !)? What's your bodyweight?

I am 5' 9" and nearly 16st.

Never bothered competing and when you look at my bodyweight and look at even regional powerlifting records they are benching over 200kg's. Bit out of my league.

What about strongman? I know robs best was 320kg with the training im sure you'd get there.

My next big thing is learning the clean and jerk properly or power cleans. See what robs says to do.

Si

reading tels reply: Thats what i thought too. Dead's are suppose to be the body's biggest lifts

Si,

I've always liked the Strongman competition's I have most of them on video from 1988. I also have Pure Strength held in 1987 to find the Strongest Man that ever lived.

At 5' 9" the events are not suited to someone below 6'. You've only to look at Ab Wolders (did I spell that right), Rob Dixon and Stumpy to see what I mean. I think it's a shame really that it can't be a level playing field.

I've always thought if I'd been 6' plus I could have done some gear and done some of the Strongman events. But even so my knees are troublesome now so to have pushed it further would lead to further problems.

My strength is not in the same league as these guys though. Looking at sqauts in the strongman events the top guys do over 400kg's and these are not on a regular bar. If anything this normally makes it harder. Fair enough this is world class level but even in this country on a regional level they will be capable of over 300kg squats.

Si,

Where's the Mal Kay show, date, times etc?

The video's are World's Strongest Man 1988-2002 but one year missing as I made the mistake of lending it out. I have the Pure Strength, Pure Strength II, Pure Strength III. Pure Strength II and III are team events of pairs from various countries.

Si,

Had a look on the UK strongman site and like you say does not tell you much. If you find anymore details post it up. I'm from West Yorkshire and so is near me.

CC,

I know what you mean about getting back to your best. I don't think I will ever get back to a position of squatting over 200kg's again.

lol!

Sorry, it depends which starting point. I started when I was 15 in 1987 and could squat about 40 or 50kg. By 1990 I was squatting 200kg.

I took a very simple approach. One week if I did 100kg for 6 reps my target the next week was 7 reps. If I was feeling good I would go for a couple more reps. Once I built up to 10 reps for say two weeks I would add another 10kg's and start off at whatever I could do, say 4 or 6 reps. If I was having a bad day I would always make sure I never did less than last week.

This proved very effective for me as I recall trying this when I hit a sticking point of 90kg for 6 reps. I was so pre-occupied with trying to get to 100kg. So following the above I just aimed for 7 reps. In the space of 3 to 6 months I went from 90kg for 6 reps to 140kg for a couple of reps.

So by setting very small goals I have achieved a great deal (by my standards anyway).

It is good to see that others are not only into scoobs but the gym too! Thats one thing i like about Sccobynet, loads of variation of topics.

Spen, yeh I know ...it's like when you're younger, you're more motivated, you have more time for the gym, the gym comes first etc...

When you get older other stuff gets in the way, 'tis a shame.
To be honest my goals have changed a bit, when i was a yoof i wanted to be as big n strong as poss...now I'd rather be quite lean and fairly strong, almost a 'normal' physique but in good shape...but I'm certainly not that either lol !!

Ah well....no point thinking about what you were, think about what you're gonna be .

Robs got me doing pyramid method
So a normal day i'd do.

10 reps at 90kg
6 reps at 110kg
4 reps 130kg
1-2-3-4 reps 140kg depends really how fked i am
6 reps 110kg
15 reps 90kg.
then 5*5 front squating straight after.

I usually only use the belt and wraps on the 2 4 reps just for addicational support.

Without having support its kinda dodgy, if i fail it hits the pins but even being assisted back up is better then hitting them
