Ford Puma? The handling is incredible, much better than a Scooby until you put coilovers on it. The 1.7 has 25 BHP more than the Zetec S and a much more tractable torquey engine, but it is nowhere near properly fast I won't pretend. When I nab it off the wife the only thing for similar money I have not been able to keep up with was a Cooper S. It seems quite easy to catch up France's finest hot hatches under braking and cornering and get the power down early out of corners to keep up. The Cooper S was a different story I have to admit.

I once had a brilliant run against a 1.7 puma (it must of been the 1.7 as it was good sport). We came off sherrifhall roundabout and had the road to ourselves. We both floored it from about 20mph and probably added about 100 on to that (+/- 50mph ). The saxo slowly creeped away from it (a few car lengths in all) so I was quite impressed with the Puma. No twisties though so I can't comment on its abilities there The Racing Puma looks soooooooooo much better though

Driving one of France's finest hot hatches I had no probs catching up with a Cooper S - and when he clocked me gaining he booted it
(admittedly, my hot hatch is from the golden era though!! )
On the dual carriageway straight haul though there was nothing in it.......
he he!!

I don't know what all the fuss is about with Pumas, I once had a play with one on the way home from work. Both gave way at a roundabout, next to each other, coast went clear so we both floored it onto the dual carrigeway, he wheelspan too much - I didn't. Once I'd got the VTS in the powerband (above 4.7k) it didn't come back out. I'd pulled about 6 car lengths on him by 80mph, I wasn't going to go higher than that, so lightly pressed the brake pedal so he knew I'd finished. He came past me and waved, was a 1700. See a Racing Puma everyday, just looks like a tarts' car if you ask me
For 8k, I'd be looking at a Saxo VTS, a Renault Clio Williams, a 205 with an Mi-16 lump, a 106 GTi, 306 GTi-6/Rallye et al. All good fun, go well and are pretty economical.

He got a shocking launch though SB! No 1.4 Puma can wheelspin that much! Was obviously a total amatuer I had about 4 car lengths on him before he even got off the line So once on the move I probs pulled 2 car lengths on him. Who knows, I thrashed him either way
I haven't had a run in with a Cooper S yet, but I've raced a mate in his VTR, with me in a Cooper, dead even straight line performance, but he couldn't keep up going round/over roundabouts. My VTS would be slightly better than his VTR, coz I have the standard 15s, so little bit more grip.
Was your VTS standard, SB?

Yeah, mines was standard 1/4m of 15.3 @ 89mph - fastest I've ever seen for a standard VTS
Lol, its not even worth bothering about if the guy screwed his start up that much Any car (even a scooby) can do some mental spinning with enough provocation

8K, and you are talking abiout saxo's, and fiestas... No offence, but you can get a real monster of a car... scoobies, porshes, MR2 Turbos, 200 ZX's, 300ZX's, and so on!!
So chappy..what will it be?
Shopping trolley, or a decent fast sportscar??

saxo boy, i have one of the "fast" VTS' (came 137bhp standard), i used to play reg with a racing puma, and from any speed i.e 0mph, 20mph, 120mph i could put distance on it. If you check the figures, they aint all that special, especially the normal 1.7!! This is straight line im talking about, i have a very snazzy suspension set up and could out corner it as well (could be more to do with driver though).
If i had 8k to spend id buy a secondhand s/c VTS or 106gti as there maybe one or 2 for sale soon!

1996 BMW 328i ES, 1996, black
leather interior, 34,000 miles, FSH, sports wheels with new tyres, Alpine CD, excellent condition. £7,995.
Hardly little, but very nippy, 60 in under 7, RWD handling, refinement and reliability?
Sorry someone will shoot me for suggesting a BM

The 130bhp saxo's are very mystical in that nobody seems to know what was different. All I know is that mines had to be one cause it was MUCH faster than the book figures! My 1/4m time was faster than Craggy's standard time and there is no doubt that his VTS is fooking fast I presume it was a standard 1.7 I played with, it might have been modded I wouldn't have known. It was also a long time ago so my memory is hairy. The only hot-hatch to put some distance on my VTS was the VTEC crx at Crail but they have 160bhp and are just as light if not lighter! Btw, there is an option. A mint crx and lots of money for mods, etc

the 130bhp saxos are 2000 x reg. basically they have the same map on the ecu as the late ones, but no exhaust emissions **** on it, so no restriction and better map, hence more power, heard rumours bout bigger valves as the cylinder heads on x reg onwards have differnt part numbers as well.
Craggys is as mystrey, he hammed it from 100miles, thats my explantion, plus it seems no quicker than mine to be honest
if you dont want a saxo, consider a 106gti perhaps??

I'm not trying to talk anyone into a saxo as the poster said right at the start he didn't want one. But I would draw to your attention that he said little and some of the cars you are suggesting do not qualify!!
