Cool

Heres your first job then:

Clear Fronts

Makes a world of difference for £10, and you can easily swap them back later

Heres my old red GTi with them done:

Leave it as standard!!!! Doc, your car is a thing of beauty and needs to be left as is. Brought a tear to my eye remembering my old Pug. Still the best car I ever owned apart from the engine blowing at 117,000 ish miles.

New rear lights on mine also:

You need a new wiring loom for the rears, but I made one myself, and the units only cost £10 each.

You can always return it to standard afterwards, but they look so much better and cleaner.

LOL

Them were the days, back when I was a mere 22

That exhaust was a beast - had it specially made as a full system, but asked them to remove the centre silencer, so it was basically 2.5" tubing from the downpipe all the way back to a small rear silencer and the 4" pipe - sounded fantastic, and used to spit flames on the rev limiter

Only problem was it melted the rear valence, but in a good way as it moulded itself around the tailpipe very smoothly.

LOL @ Dreamweaver.
Does anyone know if the rear red plastic trim was a factory option?? Normally I see the black plastic trim.

Ahh you mean the rear tailgate panel. Very possibly an option I would say - get it changed though, black looks better.

Ah - the red reflective rear - yep, it was an option or a dealer part. Everyone now hates them, so whip it off and the get plastic boot bit back on, looks much better and it'll be even more original then!

There are 2 trims so be careful though. Phase 1 became phase 2 in 1990, earlier cars were grey trim, later cars were black.

Anyone else spotted another potential timewarper in this weeks Trader? D plate (early dash then) 1.9 GTi in red, 1 owner, 50k miles?

Just more old fashioned, 2 spoke steering wheel, slider controls for the heater etc, and a lot squarer.

Had the car a week now and its my first Pug so I`ll give you an unbiased report
Engine:
Very liverly low down the rev range and slowly runs out of legs at the top end, nippy enough for bombing around definatly. Bit noisy on tickover from cold but soon warms up and makes a satisfying sound when revved. Seems pretty tight all round.
Bodywork:
Love it, love the lines and the look cant fault it really
Suspension:
Best thing about the car, mine has power steering so I was a little cautious to start with it seemed like it was about to drift on heavy cornering so I backed off at first after I got used to it I gave her more and more and to my surorise the car just ate up the bends without a hint of wheel schreech (Michelins) very impressed at the handling.
Brakes : Very impressed actually seem to work very well and are sharp straight from the initial depress.

The only things I can pick fault with are:
Clutch is too lively really when driving in heavy traffic I feel it jerks about theres a definate art to driving slowly.
I would love to drop the seat a bit in height I feel I`m sitting on the car instead of in it and my head touches the side of the sunroof on tall days.
So there we have it I have no plans to get rid for a while so it should be happy motoring for a year or so.

One of the few cars where you actually feel like the whole thing is "attached" to you. Sounds odd, but you will know what I mean after a few months.

Also good for 45mpg on motorway runs.

+Doc+ and ScoobyJawa, you're both lucky sods! Doc, hurry up and clean the underside of your's, looks like it'll come up like new, otherwise just leave it as it is!

Jawa, your's looks lovely, and you have the best colour, 1.9 for me, everytime! Set clear side repeaters though?

I'm thinking of getting one as my next car, I currently have a 2001 Saxo VTS, will the 1.9 be as much fun/as quick? Won't be for a couple of years yet, so hopefully I'll be able to afford a nice clean one, then put an Mi16 lump in it. Loving the VTS at the mo, I'm told the VTS and 1.9 GTi are quite alike in terms of driver involvement/fun ?

Cheers Rich Yeah - I may do the side repeaters, although I too want to keep it as close to Peugeot intended as possible!

Sorrento was always one of my favs, along with Miami Blue and Laser Green. But the 205 is a funny beast, seems to carry off every colour it was made in. Eg I don't really like red or white cars, but the GTi still looks great in both those colours - and indeed, my first 205 GTi was red!

As for the VTS. Yes the 1.9 is as quick, I've had a little play with a couple of VTS's and there is nothing in it in a straight line (not bad for 13years old ) and as for the handling the 1.9 just seems to have the edge, and bags of grip too - especially on Eagle F1's - I can get away with just about Impreza speeds on most corners which is plain mental!!!! The VTS is a good car, and not a bad package, and the 2 are quite similar, but the 106GTi is closer to the 1.9, the 106 being the slightly better handler than the VTS, but still close!

Driver involvement and fun - takes alot of car to beat the 1.9! (or indeed 1.6) I still smile everytime I drive it, just like I did with the scoob! Great cheap motoring!

Doc

Remove the thick plastic shims that sit between the seat and the carpet - lowers the seat slightly. An easy job - did it on all 7 of mine, as I'm 6'3".

The jerking in traffic is driveline shunt - nothing to do with the clutch. Some are better than others, but the car's notorious for it. Your 89/90 model should be pretty good by 205 standards.

It looks a lovely car, and the 1.6's the one to have. Keep it standard and look after it; you've got a future classic there.

Cheers

Toonman,
Thanks for the comments.
One thing I can do is look after it, It`ll always be garaged and I dont do a lot of miles at all.
I gave it a clean at the weekend as I was spunging the tyres I had a quick sponge under the arches and there is a loverly red paintwork under about 1mm of dirt looks like they will come up a treat, might clean it up then get it waxoyled to stop the rot.

Cheers Jawa mate, I've always liked the 205 GTi, only got a VTS 'coz it was a bargain and has warrenty left on it. I don't agree 'bout the 106GTi having better handling though, mine on standard 15s just has the edge over a 106GTi on standard 14s. 106 is slightly slower in a straight line too

Fair enough if you're going to keep it original, I can't quite understand this oringality business, (except on 1960s Minis, my main passion) but then I'm only 18 Looks gorgeous even with orange side repeaters anyway

Thing I love most about my 205 is that I'm not paying it off every month! - I used to pay £400 a month for the car loan for the Scooby + fuel + insurance, etc (probably around £700 in total).

Feels great having a car that's not going to lose any more cash.

The rush when the Mi16 engine screams above 4k revs is sweet too

Looks like the Scoobynet 205GTi Appreciation Society is growing in numbers.

Mine's ready for a freshen up and will be coming off the road soon, but still feels great.

Ex girlfriend had 2 new VTS's on the trot. No comparison in my admittedly humble opinion. Not as flexible, poorer gearchange, over assisted steering, worse seats and driving position and not as reliable. Stick to the original, and accept no imitations.
