ATTN : All - Re : Mycroft
Banning seems harsh (and pointless? Couldn't he just re-register as someone else?)
Hapless? yes
To be pitied? Probably
To be amused by? Definitely - he was too transparently provocative to be offensive, and you have to be amused when the muppets all believe the threads he invents!
Requires banning? No. I didn't see the cancer thread but nothing else I've seen of his gets even close to being worthy of a ban. If people are really upset by his posts, don't read them. It's like Mary Whitehouse applying her twisted sense of morality to the viewing public when I was younger.
I feel the moderators have crossed the line here and it makes Scoobynet a less pleasing place to be - it feels like being back at school again and, frankly, rather insulting. Fine, people might complain now and then - the great thing about a forum is that you can reply, however. Surely the complainers should be articulate enought to justify their complaints in open forum, rather than running to 'teacher' ????
Shame on you

I actually note that the people objecting to banning Mycroft aren't really aware of exactly what he did do.
Had I been away from the board for say 1 week then i'd have said Mycroft was just a little irritant to some at times, but actually he can be a breath of fresh air as far as the usual mundane postings go.
But, and it's a big but, this week he has crossed the line by some margin with his cancer remarks.
On the strength of this case, the terms and conditions should be altered to allow a nominated team to stone anybody behaving in a similar manner, banning is too good.

Thats the problem Mycroft - other people DO bear malice, and go to ridiculous lengths.
I didn't read the comments on cancer, but lost my grandfather to a combination of lung cancer and asbestosis last year - but nothing anyone posted on a bbs would upset me about it. A public forum with this many members will be full of conflicting views - we either accept it or censor it all to suit the majority. You can't just censor one thread about a particular disease which just happens to be quite emotive.

If we *have* to vote then I'd vote 'yea' to a ban, but only because I'd like to show support for Simon and the mods and the 'community'), not because I think Mycroft deserves it.
In all honesty I can't see the 'yeas' winning though because a bunch of freedom of speech moaners will turn up and destroy the thread now. I'll be the first to say '****' though as there is a high correlation between '****' being mentioned in a thread and the threads demise.

What worries me most about this is that Mycroft has just come on here... posted.... and not even hinted at an apology re comments he has made that have deeply offended alot of people
Personally that stinks and although I have no problem with Mycroft at all, people should learn how to get on with other humans.... simple.

Simon,
If you start this, where will it stop?
The innappropriateness of some of Mycrofts posts (excluding the cancer post which I haven't seen), is sometimes no worse than the abuse of privelige one or some of your moderators can display.
Mycroft winds a lot of people up, myself included. I don't bother replying anymore. But the same old posters constantly get suckered in and make things worse. So are they guilty as well?
You can't ban the colourful posters. Why not surprise us and post a list of all members who are on your banning short list? Would be interesting to see who they are and why they're there.

Mycroft is a sad little man with to much free time who spends his days winding people up he went way to far with the cancer thing but giving people like him the ammunition is only going to have one result. Every one lives and learns and he is a good reminder to not give to much of ypurdelf away on a public BBS that any lowlife can read.
Why should anyone be offended by what a stranger types on his keyboard? Particularly when they have enough information about the indivdual to form an opinion that he does it just to get a response? My grandma and father died due to cancer. My mother is in a wheelchair with MS. No one on this board can say anything about either affliction that will offend me as it's not real life! It's just a BBS!

The whole point of BBS's is so that people can spout opinion - whether you agree with them or not!
Personally, I like to read controversial threads and see peoples reactions to them.... some are hilarious.
Remember co55ie???? Some of the funniest threads I have read - not becuase of what he said but because of peoples reactions to what he said!
I say dont ban him - controversial or otherwise.
Re: Cancer Jokes? My Father (RIP) died of cancer as did my Granfather. Whilst joking about the situation is not in particularly good taste (and may have a different effect on those who have experienced it first hand), I personally do not take offence at jokes made about people with cancer. Sometimes you need to look at such devastating topics as Cancer with a sense of humour just to lighten up the whole thing. Likewise, I also find some jokes about Irishmen offensive - It's all about personal taste and tollerances (aka freedom of speech?)
Let the guy be an idiot if that is what he wants to do. And lets all have a good laugh at his expense!
Mak.

The wonderful thing about life and even a BBS is that everyone is different. What doesn't offend you may offend others, what offends you may not offend others. That's the way it works.
What we have to do is work out what offends the majority.
All the best

It's all an act on Mycroft's part. He can be amusing, intelligent and funny.
It's only when he hooks a fish on his bait that he runs with it and unfortunately, there are a lot of fish in SN....
He has a different point of view from most people and to be honest, banning him when there are others out there FAR more deserving of a ban is wrong, IMHO. It seems to be based more on "I don't like Mycroft" rather than "Mycroft posts many offensive threads".
People get wound up very quickly and that is hardly anathema to people like Mycroft. Those who step back, grin at his postings and watch are entertained. Those whom he winds up are amusing to watch getting more and more annoyed.
Let him be, IMHO.

Hey I have a great idea!
Why don't we create a big thread that a certain attention seeking individual will just love - and no doubt be gloating about it on his own website.
If you are goping to ban him, ban him, don't discuss it! It only increases his infamy!

Laughter is what makes life bearable, for if we was not to laugh then we would all surely be dead already.
Humanity can be best judged by its own ability to laugh in the face of adversity, if something does not beat us then surely it makes us better? If this is the case then if we let something beat us then surely it makes us worse off for not having it show us that the reality of life is that it is one big joke on all of us.
After going to my brothers funeral IIRC the first episode of 6 feet under came on that night on channel 4, what did I do, you may ask. Well I did not ring up channel 4 or contact points of view or write a stern letter off to the press complaining about how dare they have a show on about Funeral directors instead I just switched it off, simple really isn't it? If there is something you dont like, dont participate.
Now if the programme had started with we are gonna aim this at an individual whos brother was cremated today in Aldershot then yes I feel I would have the right to complain. Being able to laugh shows that you have come through the other side and are not giving up on life and its crazy joke on all of us that we no matter what will all die some day and we will be dead for a long time so laugh now is what I say, dont be on your death bed regretting not laughing when you had the chance.
Maybe I am right maybe I am wrong but untill what I type is designed to directly hurt others then I will laugh at WTF I want to. I did not read the jokes mycroft posted so could someone email them to me please?

Last night he posted a number of jokes and made offensive comments about people suffering from cancer.
They were not "light hearted ammusment" or "an alternative point of view" but just down right offensive to anyone who has had cancer be part of their life.

I mentioned that there are others in my initial post. That subject is not up for discussion in this thread. You've said what you think should happen, that's the end of it. Thank you.
Best regards

I'm in two minds on this.
On the one hand, I cordially loathe Mycroft and the way he ruins just about every thread I've ever seen him post on. I dislike his evasiveness, his fraudulent claims to academic greatness, his constant sneering and his condescending attitude.
On the other hand, he's less offensive than many, and at least has some brainpower. And there is the freedom of speech point of view to consider.
Overall, let him stay.

ps Oh, and Mice, I'm sure you didn't mean that people rising to the bait was anathema to Mycroft; quite the reverse, I'd have said.

Mycrofts input for the main seems to be just troll like antics, but thats no reason for a ban is it?
I'd say let him stay but give him a stern telling off? Give him lines to do after school?
Otherwise I fear this course of action could well be a case of -

Come on mods, you're going to have to do better than 'we felt he was offensive'. How many complaints from people that can't articulate themselves in open forum do you need? (Yes, the ones that 'run to teacher' by reporting a thread to the mods).
Let the board decide for themselves - it is excellent at self-policing (note the number of slap-downs MyCroft got in his threads).
This is not to demean or undermine the valuable role the mods play but, really, when you post:
"As for your cancer jokes good show, cannot wait for those. Bring it on bad boy!" [Habgood]
then what do you expect? By all means delete/lock threads and there can be a reasoned debate afterwards as to why. But to ban someone because you lost your rag?

although I'm new I have seen some of the antics of mr Mycroft over on the MLR, now a bit of childish banter is fair enough i think from a standpoint that is the best way for everybody to get along, but how many meets or events does this guy take part in, what does he offer to the board, these are of course all questions that you have to ask yourselve's
his general abuse or picking on individuals is not a clever thing to be doing I gave that up when I left primary school !! he is attention seeking using shock methods i.e provoking feelings and emotions via his cancer thread.
it is amazing that people's ***** grow extremely big when behind a keyboard,
if anything don't ban him just let him carry on making a fool out of himself, that is the greatest punishment, and he can be his only cure when he decides to act his age

Just ban him ! If he's posting stuff that jepodaises scoobynet and it's reputation then do it.
If it were a place of work etc, he would be dealt with in a similar mannor. Why should a BBS be any different !
Bye Bye Mycroft !

my 2p worth is mycroft hasn't hurt anyone (to my knowledge)
and its up to individuals whether they 'tangle' with him or not.
i'm sure its not personal with him, just a bit of a laugh,
which others may take the wrong way.
Dont think a ban will do him or others any good.
I'm probably gonna bring down the search engine doing this, but there are probably many 'constructive' threads from him as well.
Its just the slaggings and cussing that gets the limelight.
<end of 2p>, have no more money!!!

I am inclined to support him.
Not so keen on the cancer comment, but who is to say there isn't truth in it.
personally I would say its gods way of moving things on faster.
aside from that, I think mycroft is gifted and highly intelligent. he may come across as an arrogant sod, but so what? he can contribute plenty when it comes to technical questions, and provoke interesting arguments, even if he wins most of them on the basis of semantics when he comes across peopel who stand a chance of knowing as much as he might on a subject.
Either way, I think banning him is wrong.
having followed the link to this from the skyline register I must admit to cringing at the "for the good of the community" nature of the original post.
It is laughable. Do people on here see us as one big happy family?
I certainly don't. I am here for the technical merit and to help other people. Mycroft has helped me in the past in both these areas, but also made me laugh. It would damage "the community" to eradicate him.

Nothing Mycroft has ever said has offended me, although I have lost elderley relatives to cancer. It is obvious that Mycroft's comments regarding cancer have caused greif in SN to more sensetive members, I think it only fair that he apologise for that.
I can't ever recall repling to a Mycroft thread, as his topics don't paticularly interest me, though I generally read them as they can be quite amusing in terms of the heated arguments.
Mycroft is quite correct in that he should not have to justify/apologise for any of his postings - I would aggree to that when talking about cars or No plates, but the cancer comments derserve an apology, and Mycroft Knows this - but from what I have gathered from his posts, he will be too stubborn / pig headed to do it.
For my money Mycroft can wind people up till he's blue in the face - you can't deny he's good at it.
[b]Mycroft - eat some humble pie and apologise for the heartless comments.[b]
Scoobynet - If he's getting on your t1ts - IGNORE HIM.
another 2p's worth,
cheers,
mike.
