Ultimate Q Car
#61
I think those Subaru Forrester things are quite a q-car - don't they share a lot with the Impreza, just in a kind of "jacked-up estate car" kind of body?

For reasons beyond my understanding... I always think that the brothers name is Jewish in origin... not Italian... I have to look at the book on my shelf to type it correctly...

MC,
So why don't Soarer's fall in the "Rice" bracket then?
Seen one on track and it went out the back like a Mini. Thought it was some sort of Lux Barge and wondered why he was taking it on track. Might even have been you... Slow as a 90 year old Sloth on pension day and not worthy of Q-car monicker...
LOL

Jeesh Iain - give it a bloody rest will ya?
Q-Cars for me (and Q-car slang came from Q-ships of WW1)
Mercedes 500e - porsche engineered lunacy
Audi RS2 - porsche engineered lunacy with room for a sofa
And best of all.... my mates car....
A-Reg Gold Sierra 5 Door 1.6GL - totally stock from the outside.
in the engine room it had a 2.9 Cosworth V6, plus blower, plus laughing gas.....
Stupidly quick - a touch tricky on 195/50/15s though!!

Have to say that the Merc Cosworth is a bit of a Q car. Very few people know what they are and what they are capable of. Unless you have huge COSWORTH stickers down the side (saw one like this the other day)
PS how is the re-spray coming on?

My Q-cars [as first coined by Duesenberg ... I don't own a ship or a barge !]
Would not be too dis-similar...
Soarer [modded]
Mercedes 500e... big car, big go....
Audi RS2... Estate car... and the rest...
F150 Ford pick-up... NO ONE ever expects a sub 13 second pick-up

On the subject of the Cos-merc, back in the early 90's I discovered that the 2.3-16 was on give and take roads no faster than a Peugeot 405 Mi-16... that was 400cc down and FWD as well... the Cos-merc is no 'Q' car if it can be beaten by a production 4 pot from France with less power and CC... falls at the first hurdle.

B18 BHP was when it lived the ultimate Q car, perfectly normal looking Sierra until it lit the back wheels up !
Will always remember my trip round the Ring in it and the looks on the Porsche drivers faces !
Sierra Coswoths get my vote as these days not many people know what the are / were.

Mark - don't talk to me about resprays mate - not got there yet... still on suspension and oily stuff. Has now become a mission to build an entirely new 2.3-16v from bits - irritating thing is there wasn't a lot wrong with it to start with. Damm perfectionist streak coming through again...
Mycroft - 2.3-16v vs. Mi16. And your point is?
The Pug is considerably newer is it not? given the Merc 16v appeared in 85 and the Mi16 appeared when?
Most stuff will outrun a 16v 190 - not a lot go round corners like one though. Like most performance motors of the era (M3, Cossie, UR-q, Grale) you have to know how to drive a car properly to get the best from it.
But then I'm not gonna take the bait - which is what you really getting at...
Thought of a proper Q-Car.... GMC Cyclone.

I think MC said they were 'Q' cars or close to it..
The cars were contemporaries... both 'G' reg [I think] the 'other driver was a rather good professional saloon car racer and I can just about drive OK... we swapped cars on the return leg the Mi-16 was faster on both legs...
The point is that Jean Todt did ask for the Mi-16 4×4 to be available in turbo form... I think a few were made like that... from the Desert Rally cars... 285hp... and lightning quick...
Now THAT is a 'Q' car... never seen one only read about it... kinda like the idea as the 405 chassis was good... very good.
Just to show how difficult this subject is I asked where 'Q-car' came from on the MEF... we are all wrong as it came from the Fraser-Nash of the pre-war era... it means 'quiet car' but basically take a racing Fraser-Nash put a normal(ish) exhaust on it take off the numbers etc and that is a Q-car... hahaha
Sod it... who cares anymore... did the Americans land on the moon or was it a hoax... hahaha
--------
Gordon Bennett is in on it now!!!
Apparently Gordon Bennett used the term first according to 'Pickles' on the MEF... could easily lose the will to live...

Anyway
Has anybody ever seen a Scoob with a front mounted intercooler and a Sport bonnet? With so many people going for front mounts I'm suprised nobody has done it.
Hmmm... if they had they would hardly be telling everybody on an open forum though

Mycroft - the 2.3 was only C & D plate... thereafter it was 2.5 until '92. The 2.5 was the slower car - too much capacity, not enough revs sort of thing. Heavier too.
Anyway, I digress.
Contemporaries or not - by G-Plate, the Merc was already obsolete (along with the M3, UR-q etc) - and the Mi16 was a far newer bit of kit...

thats exactly what I'd like to do to my Impreza
get rid of the intercooler scoop and a front mount the only problem is the cost which as far as I can work out would run into £1000's fitted
