Question

OK chaps can you answer me this.

I'm looking at buying a car that currently resides in the middle of Scotland. The car is not currently insured (as I believe it is at a garage). The car will be MOT'd before I buy, but will have no Tax.

I will have no insurance on the car but will be able to get a quote and ring up on the day to get cover, but not have the documents. As I will be 300+ miles from home, I don't want 2 round trips of 650 miles to look and then pick the car up.

So, would I be alright in buying the car and then driving it back home without tax, with the intention of keeping it off the road and buying some tax as soon as I get back?

This is an honest question, not an attempt to break the law, just one of those painful logistics questions.

I doubt it.

1.Get the garage to tax it or you wont buy it
2.alternatively bring it home on a trailer,
3.or take the risk and drive home without tax.

Hanslow - it's definite "no" i'm afraid, having been in a similar position myself in the past. There are no "one-off" exemptions, no matter for how short a period.

language like what South Star- there's no profanity there, I just consider grasses to be the lowest form of life thats all.

As for hiding my email address you'll find its not given so my mail box doesn't get full of cr*p from the d1cks that populate this board. I'm just here to kick back and have some laughs and so far I am. When I get bored I'll go away until then, here I stay.

Hanslow - most definitely NO. If the car is on the road, it needs tax. End of story. With the crackdown on us motorists that is going on at the moment, offering any kind of excuse to be done is daft. Best to get your insurance documents, see the car, collect the MOT certificate, go to a post office, tax the car, then drive it home.

Ive actually decided im not going to re-tax my car next time round as I refuse to see the money wasted elsewhere

Does that mean im going to have a bunch of "do-gooders" from scoobynet shopping me every five minutes?

Bearing in mind my cars is probably more road legal than 95% of all other cars in terms of its roadworthyness?

Question

I don't know for definite if it's from a garage, just intrigued why it a) has no insurance and b) he can conveniently borrow some trade plates.....

Anyway, ****! Thought everything was going too smoothly. Problem now then is that do I insure the car before I've seen it?

Would happily trailer it back, except I haven't got one, nor a car to tow it with. The missus' car ain't got a tow bar on either.

Oh the other pain is that I'm off to look at it on a Sunday, which means no Post Offices open

Insurance companies are open on Sundays....some of them....

Have you not seen this car before? Yet you're willing to buy it there and then?

If you want to take the risk, then do...but personally I wouldn't condone that.

Wink

It's not the insurance that's the problem as such. Given that I will be on holiday up north, they aren't gonna be able to get the certificate to me so that I can go to a post office (which I can't do anyway cos it's a Sunday) if you get my drift.

I've done some research into the car, and just for interest it ain't a Scoob, and it all seems fine. It's what I want and as long as the test drive goes OK then I am happy to buy it there and then. I've already done the sleeping on it thing. I'll know if I want it after I've driven it and will be alright walking away as I might be able to get another one. This one has 99% the right spec for me though so I don't want to miss it! I've got pictures of the car, which I know ain't the same as seeing it in the flesh, but I have a number of pics and it does look sweet

The guy said he may be able to trailer the car to near where I will be staying, yet again, without the insurance docuemnts with me, I will not be able to take them to a post office to get the tax. I think I will need to talk to the insurers and see what I can do and if necessary take out a policy before hand just to get the paperwork so that I can then get to a post office to get the tax! Bloody red tape
