I was at a Caterham garage yesterday picking up some new tyres, They had a Caterham nearly finished being built (just engine to go in, and some bits n bobs to sort out)

440bhp BDT Cosworth Engine (440lb/ft torque)

Taken from an rs200 rally car!

Had an absolutely mental paint job too, totally multicoloured.

It's gonna be an absolute beast when it's finished (not sure how theyll get around the wheelspin probs associated with a 400bhp engine in a car weighing 500kg though )

Wanna see what it is like when finished !

Question

I am looking into getting a bike engined Caterham at the end of the year. That way I can build her to my spec, all ready for the summer
I know the Westfield is the cheaper alternative, but I want the Caterhams aluminium bodywork and always wanted a Cat.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a BEC forum or similar?

Question

Merkin, I have already spoken to James and am now waying up the options.
Been on Blatchat, don't see much on BEC's though.

Am I right in thinking that it is only the Blackbird engine available for the 'official' Caterham, or are there other alternatives?
How does the Blackbird engine rate against what is available, Hybusa etc?

The most common power units:

Fireblade engine - good power, very revvy, light, doesn't appear to need dry sumping. Engines are very cheap - almost throwaway.

Blackbird - more power, more torque, more weight! Needs dry sumping for track use. Engines more expensive.

Hayabusa - the daddy. Needs dry sumping for track use. Engines very expensive.

People are starting to use other engines (the R1 engine for example) in their kits - these will probably make an appearance on factory built cars in time.
