Steve,

Jen just passed on the bad and then the good news so let's hope it all gets sorted out - I imagine you and your wallet are pretty relieved!

Just got back from snowboarding but have seriously overspent for the month so gonna have to drop out of this

Will be at work until 7am on Saturday anyway so probably would've crashed en route!

Definitely going to try and get to the New Forest meet though.

Red face

Len,

If I have been spending money on my other 3 cars and not my Scooby, when I was at school 3 + 1 = 4

I have got another Rally Slag to play with, which hopefully should be running by the end of today , must try and sell the Micra and Civic to fund my snowboarding holiday, Scooby, project XX, house & I better buy Eileen a pesent aswell.

Colin,

I know that you were at school a long time before me, but I meant your 3 cars ( the ones your spending cash on ) + mine = 4! didn't realize you were thinking about trying to improve the "Ultimate" Purple Scoob!

Oo sounds interesting! ...Colin - are we going to have to torture you to find out what "project XX" is?

P.S. Len, Shouldn't that be a "long, long time"?

Oh dear..... got a big end bearing problem. Some of you will remember that I said the car was using some oil.... is this a more likely cause?

More importantly, how do I protect against it in the future. Is it time for better quality oil / more frequent changes? A car which cost 22k new that has had an engine life, before a rebuild, of 28,000 milage doesnt add up to me. Especially as it hasnt been on track or seriously abused.

pi$$ed right off

Jen,
Your right, should have been "LONG LONG" time! but you know me always polite!

Steve,

I suggest you use a good quality oil,I use Motul Competition 15w/50w which was indicated by the experts on this board to be one of the best, oils were investigated thoroughly when the subject of bearing failure was being debated, £45 for 5 litres though! I change filter and oil every 6000 miles, expensive I know but it could save thousands in the long run.

Thanks Len,

I have done a search on here this afternoon and come up with the short list of Mobil 1 Motorsport 15/50, Castrol RS 15/60 along with the Motul you are using. You are right though in seeing it as savings in the long run !!

Will fill you all in on the details Saturday but the deal I am getting is not as good as it looked yesterday but what concerns me is that I am not getting any possible explanations apart from ‘bad luck’.

Cheers

Steve,

Sorry to hear things are not quite as good as you first thought, having carried our my own investigation some time ago and after speaking to various people I don't think that Mobil 1 is considered to be in the same league as Castrol RS or Motul,I've spoken to several people who have run "Race" prepared Superbikes and they said that they would not touch Mobil 1.Just some more comments to further confuse you!

Sorry to hear about the car Steve. Just goes to show that it is not necessarily the badly abused cars that get sick.

Colin you must have too much time on your hands,4 cars to play with!

Does anybody know Jim Osman's phone number as the one I have is not right and I need to let him know the details for Saturday.

Cheers Paul.

Angry

Today started off really well, looked on Scoobynet, cleaned the Scooby inside and out, fitted a couple of bits that I haven't got around too yet, adjusted freeplay on clutch master cylinder to see if it stops the clutch from slipping but it didn't, but I think it might be just good enough to get a BHP figure, maybe not an accurate torque figure though.

Then the day started going down hill, went to get my road tax ( only 4 days late ) but they would not accept my MOT certificate as the reg was incorrect, even though it turns out it has been incorrect on the last 3 MOTs and the same Post Office has issued the tax with out question. Dropped the MOT certificate back to MOT station and got a duplicate MOT, then I decided to go into Southampton to get some Optimax and Octane booster. Halfords didn't have any Octane booster so I had to get it from Regal Auto sport in the end.

On the way home I noticed I was only running 0.8 bar boost instead of 1.2 bar which I thought was a bit strange. When I got to Rownhams I noticed there was a lack of power to the point that the car nearly came to a stop, at this point I noticed a huge plume of smoke appear from the exhaust. I stopped and open the bonnet to find the turbo is coverd in oil I managed to get home at about 5mph with a huge smoke cloud behind me. It looks like my Hybrid turbo is dead

Too pi55ed off to look at it tonight, looks like I'm going to be busy tomorrow night trying to get the old turbo back on and the boost controller all set up for Saturday. The only other thing that is worrying me is that there was a large pool of oil on my drive from the passeger side ( the turbo is on the drivers side )

I think I just realised what might of been the problem, my battery went flat before the last time I used my Scooby and I think the boost controller must have lost its memory. Thinking about it the boost controller was reading 0.8 bar but my Autometre gauge was reading 1. 7 to 1.8 bar boost peak
This might also explain why the clutch is slipping ( rated about 325 lbft max torque ) and also why I was getting loss of traction in 2nd gear on a dry road with Goodyear F1 tyres

Might be more than a blown turbo after all, maybe a part of 1 of the pistons went through the turbo first

Colin, now looking on the optimistic side of a bad day.

310 is certainly conservative

I had the AP paddles clutch.. what a nightmare, had to swap the plate to the Organic.. even this is not as good as the standard clutch.. but then I expected that

Steve I'm running the Helix organic clutch which I thought I heard Mark Aiken say was only capable of approx 325 lbs, I could be wrong though.

The person I bought my hybrid from said it was an animal after it destroyed his engine, he could be right after seeing what it's done to mine.

Martin where / what time do you want to meet Saturday morning. Might end up going in Project XX Saturday, at least thats now running until the mods start ( here we go again )

I had a " back of the net " day today.

Colin, if you take the Micra then we might have a chance of our car not being at the bottom of the pile
