Nobody seems to have touched on RCE. Tried the first RCE disc "The Patriot" on a number of multi region machines. The Toshibas will get round to playing the film but not get at the Menu's.

Only machines I've found that will play RCE disc's no problem are two players I got from Techtronics these are region 1 imported Toshiba's modified for multi region.

Thanks for the info Lee. Reading the techtronics web site, it suggests that most of their chipped players would handle RCE disks (I've found out what they are now!!), and they even offer a free upgrade on the players that dont (eg Tosh 100)once they've cracked it. Cant be bad.

Thinking about this more, VCR friendly would be useful (just for personal backups obviously ) as would CDR palyback, so I've narrowed it down to a Pioneer 535 or a JVC something which outputs normal PAL from NTSC disks - ideal for more backups

Seems you've really got to do some homework to get what you want and a good deal. Punters walking into somewhere like Dix0n$ dont stand a chance!

I was bored the other day and went into the local Dixons, guy was trying to sell someone a DVD player and he actually said the hack for this particular player, at which stage i started laughing at the whole pointless idea of regional coding when ther's so many ways round it much to his annoyance .

Does anyone really buy anything in Dixons?! I only ever pop in when Im really depressed as realising I know a shed load more then the spotty sales assistant is a mega boost to the ego!

I use Dixons for window shopping when I'm bored. I have a good look at someting if I'm interested in it, and then go elsewhere to buy it - as the prices and service at Dixons are pretty dire.

I've just received info on how to make the Aldi Medion player multi-region:

Switch the player on at the base unit

Open the drawer and leave open

Using the handset type in 8926 then the required region code (1 for R1, 2
for R2 etc...)

Close the drawer with the required DVD in

Press play

It's a well specced player (DD5.1 decoder built in, scart, s-video,etc), but has some strange little quirks, subtitles automatically come on, so you have to turn them off manually and a tiny, tiny flicker in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

I have to agree with Robski, the Scan player is excellent - we ordered one for the "outlaws" as a Christmas present (and had to test it of course! ) - it blows away the Pioneer Dv606d we have (a few years old).

It also handles RCE coding and the menus load very, very quickly compared to our player - it is one hefty box!

Incidentally, the best way to get a signal from the DVD to a TV is Component Video (which is rare - mainly high-end projectors and some new Tosh TVs).

The next best is RGB which the Scan supports and uses the SCART cable.

The next best is S-Video (which we use as our 606 was from the U.S.)

Bringing up the rear is Composite which is like the link between your TV and VCR.

i Have a Warfedale DVD 750. Got it from Tesco for £ 179.00

Plays all regions inc. Region 0 which i understand is non regionalised disks.

It also does Video CD's and Music CD's

Performance is v.Good.

It converts all the other regions to PAL. It has the best convertor currently avaliable. This means it will play any of the regions disk back on a UK TV, which is nice!

enter this on the remote. you only need to do it once.

0 1 2 3 enter (you may need a 4 at the end)

the code for the DVD 750s is different, can't remember it off hand

I made my first trip to Aldi yesterday. Between the frozen peas and the plastic stun guns there were 3 unassuming cardboard briefcase style boxes with Medion on the outside. In one arm were nestled 2 litres of cider (£1.59 - worth a try), a packet of chocolate digestives and a German 'Stollen' cake. The other hand picked up one of these briefcase style boxes. The legs made a rush for the checkout. A nice lady with a huge trolley load let me go in front A warning to those unfamiliar with Aldi - don't expose yourself as an Aldi-Newbie by trying to pay with a credit-card

So here I am with a DVD player - now all I need a disk !

A quick trip to the video shop is in order today I think

Hopefully with the money I've saved on the DVD her-indoors will let me get the new ICE I'm drooling over

OK, DVDs play fine.

- To get DD 5.1 do you need any other connection than the SCART lead?

Also the DVDs require the volume to be turned well up whereas the CDs play at equivalent to TV volume. Is this correct?

Unless your tv ouputs Dolby Digital you will need a DD amp, if it does then you will need to use either an optical cable or a rca (same lead as used to sonnect amp to cd player) cable.

TV should do DD5.1 but the option does not yet come up on the menu. The handbook was not completely clear as to whether extra connections were required. Having your comments reinforces my opinion that I need to wrestle with the spagetti at the back of the TV again.

Yeah whats the score with the volume thing my Tosh SD100e needs the volume turned right up my TV does ouput dolby so is there something I am doing wrong??
