Audi RS6…. Should we fear it???
#61
Folks
Some excellent responses and useful info. I think, and we all knew the day would come when, the "car of the decade" era for Scooby would come to an end - its inevitable as we (mankind) make more technological and innovative advances. And that's not to say that a Scooby is a bad car.
We are not talking about traffic light grand prix here or hooliganism on the roads, just a simple thought provoking comparision. For me it would be an RS4, something about the Avant A4 model does it for me over the saloon (RS6 is too big and I am of the old hot hatch era). RS6, although not over the top aesthetically brutal, does get the message across when you look at it. And yes, I think the Audi RS6 advert is class - I like it. If you knew nothing about cars and performance, Audi certainly get the message across in that ad.
Build quality and equipment... well, enough said! But the dynamics of performance was my interest. And you might well argue that nearly £60K of Subaru with x amount of man hours development would make a good comparison, but we don't have one, nor do Subaru have any particualr interest in that market (IMO).
What I have learnt from this thread, whether it be right or wrong, is that the gulf in performance between an RS6/4 and a Scoob is much more than I had anticipated. The title should have read "Audi A6... How much should we fear it?". All beit the cars are built for different markets, they are still both four door production saloons regardless of their heritage. And quite simply, it looks like Audi does it better, much better. Perhaps one day when Impreza's are long forgotten or still run by enthusiasts as opposed to the masses, Subaru may have acheived the same status in terms of company size and backing etc, etc and it would be intersting to see what they produce then.
We enjoy our cars for what they are and can do (I for one am totally happy with mine and hope it lasts me many more years). And at the end of the day this thread was not a knock the Scooby/Audi (or any other car) forum, just a thought provoking question. I would love an RS4 and could probably have one, but not for my Scoob - greedy guts here would want both!

To the moderator,
A polite question. Had this title read something like "Top Gear - Subaru Impreza, meet Audi RS6" would it have beem moved?
It was intended as a discussion for all to compare the two cars with emphasis on the Impreza's capabalities or lack of, not soley as an Audi/Merc discussion thread.
I thought the "General" forum would be an appropriate place for it and apologies if posted incorrectly.
Regards,
Kev
PS. Just a thought. Having read several posts which have been moved to other forums, while not wanting to increase the burden on moderators, it would be good to see the moderators posting their reason/justification for moving threads (where its not glaringly obviouse of course).

the fun part of the RS6 is that you can do all the tricks with a while moving houses,
the thing is also available in estate
so that means you can beat porkies and ferrari's with your kids in the back (stripped in their harnesses)
and a dog with a helmet on (prevent brain damage from continously hitting the back window)

Guys.. this is where I but in and say that I have now had my RS6 (Daytona Grey Avant) for 3 weeks...
And I can only state how truely awsome it is... you have the power and speed but the most amazing thing is the amount of refinement that goes with it... The noise is pure NASCAR.. the V8 bellows under full power..
Thanks for all the nice comments.. and for those who think 'might' keep up in the corners.. well.. I'm sorry to dissapoint but the new suspension set up is just remarkable... the car stays very flat through the corners and you can get the power down very early due to the quattro setup.
oh.. and did you know that to 30mph it's faster than a Mclaren F1 .. of course the mclaren takes over by 60.. but my RS6 will do 70mph in second gear and well over 100 in third...
Also, I read a post about Audi guys getting their car's tuned.. correct.. I'm off to MTM soon for their stage one upgrade.. it'll give me 505bhp and over 600nm torque. I'm also going to replace the Audi brakes with movits. There is already talk of this engine being capable of 700bhp.. but Audi insiders say the gearbox is only really good for 650bhp.. so I'll probably go for something like 620bhp.. we'll see
Cheers
Dave
Ps.. If you want to see pictures of my car and other posts go to www.audi-sport.net .My user name is Dave.

Cheeseboy,
Read that thread this morning - some very nice, very fast/dynamic motors there. As for the Merc, I prefer the RS6's looks. Its looks subtly speak of impending brutal performance where the Merc conceals it. But then I suppose I have always been biased to Audi's styling as opposed to Mercedes'.

Neal your wasting your time mate
what do the motoring journalists know ?? if you want to know every detail and statistic of any car then just ask a Brit who drives a Subaru, and you will get an honest to god non biased answer *cough*
Take an Evo 6/7 or PPP'ed STI and the RS6 is just another lardy piece of German Schnitzel.
Even the Civic Type R beats in on the handling course.

LOL.. Everytime you drive it you can't help but smile... but I save the stiffy for the wife
It is by far the best car I've ever owned.. and the amount of people who clock it is amazing I've only had it upto 150mhp so far... I keep bottling it.. that is hellish fast... you pass traffic like they are parked and it only takes an old git to pull out and your all dead .
The only down side.. how does 5 mpg on full throttle sound?.. not good .. well 20mpg is a dream only acheived by my wife
Rgds

Dave,
Just registered at Audi-Sport.Net - Car looks simply awesome mate. Have yet to see one in the flesh, despite being at John Fox Audi in Nottingham on Monday (my girlfriend works there). I'm sure she'll let me know if one comes in.

Dave.
We took it up to 177mph and there was still plenty in it. The brochure says...Limited to 155
Got to agree with you about the handling, it feels rocksteady.
The only downside is the looks. I was expecting something a little more aggresive but that is being picky. It does look "purpose full" but not very aggresive (if you know what I mean).
The thing that got me was the power delivery. because it's an auto box you are just pressed back in your seat when you nail the throttle. A manual box has you lurching forwards and backwards as you change gear.
Have fun in it
Mr 6.

I cant belive anyone is comparing the RS6/M5 and E55 to a bloody Scooby! - get a grip!!
The RS6/M5/E55 are super saloons in every sense of the word, they have supercar performance with executive size and toys with build quality that far outseeds anything from Subaru or Japan for that matter, and yes I am including any Lexus in that!
These cars are swesome pieces of machinery that will only be owned by the rich and the very fortunate - there is no coparison to make as these cars kill the Subaru in every single area!
Subaru dont make the Impreza to compete with cars like this, and they will never be able to if they tried!
The title to this thread - "Should we fear it" - stop it, what a daft thing to ask!
Honestly some of the posts on this site are frankly **** poor, its like all the pointless 20 page threads about the M3 which again isnt a competitor to the Scooby - YAWN!!!!
Can people please wake up and see that the Impreza is only a 20k turbocharged 4wd saloon - it is a great car but there are lots better!

Dave,
You're talking sh1te! LOL But then I guess that you know that.
Turbo,
Agree with what you're saying.
Anyone who'd prefer a Scoob over an RS6 needs to be institutionalised! As if.

RS4 Lovely cars. I have liked all the Audis I have owned.
Came across one yesterday in my modified WRX.
Followed each other a quickish pace. A bit too wet to play properly.
I think all these cars a quick, at the end of the day it is down to how far the driver is prepsred to push it. Personaly I won't push my car to the limit on a public road just drive it hard in the right places.
Respect to the RS4
Best wishes
Steve

Comapring a Scooby to M5/RS6 etc is joke when a Scooby is taken apart by every year/model of the Evo like for like.
Appreciate what you have but be realistic,....
e.g. couple of years of martial arts training is hardly going to convert you to Bruce Lee
PS If Petter Solberg were to drive a standard UK Scoob, he would be to busy laughing becasue the only similarties would end after the Badge.

Fail to see how EVO's are to be feared.
Maybe the diaper wearing drivers of them, but not the cars.......
EVO/Scoob=same thing. Quick but by no means close to being the quickest thing on the road.

A lot of the posts make me smile/laugh. So many people like to attack threads which may well have slightly incorrect title - mostly due to enthusiasm. People see what they want to and ignore what they should understand is the actual point of the thread - as explained within.
Of course the Scooby is neither the best built nor fastest car in the world. I believe I said that! And the thread title should have been different - I believe I said that too! I am sure at least 90% of Scooby owners recognise that. The reason most people post about other cars, or in my case, is out of enthusiasm for the car they are comparing against. I think the RS6 is a beast, but still maintain that it is a bigger car than I would like - an RS4 is more my thing.
Having read the reviews on the RS6 is am more than impressed by its capabilities or remarks about its performance. But reading 'on paper' figures doesn't quite give you a feel for what its like in real life. I am unlikely to ever drive an RS6 and therefore was quite intersted top get the opinions of those more fortunate than I.
Most of the quickfire 'slagging off of threads' posts are probably written by people who have no experience of an RS6. Sensibly informative and objective posts seem to come from people that have or those who understand the real point of the thread. It was meant to light discussion to get a real life perspective of what will be and obviously is already gaining the status of a truly great super saloon.
To those that claim the the thread is '**** poor' are more than welcome to your opinion, but then you thought that from the moment you read the title - so why bother responding??? Perhpas it makes you feel better about yourselves! For me, I have acquired the info I was looking for from those intelligent enough to hold discussion and give information in a positive manner.
Thank you,
Kevin

RS6 went past me the other day, it wasnt like being overtaken by a car, more like a jet plane.
It was quite literally the quickest thing I have ever seen on the road.
