Regards so-called 'moonlighting'
I have several friends who are teachers who do bar jobs of a evening to subsidise their poor pay. Nobody accuses them of moonlighting, and quite rightly so.
If these teachers did night shifts and did their bar work of a day would it be any different? Well that is the position a firefighter is in.

Its a joke, really it is avery bad unfunny joke.
These ***** who sit in the house of lords get to play like gods, how dare the Army/Navy etc etc fireman be running around in 50 yr old outdated slow Green Goddesses when we have millions of pounds worth of technology sitting there unused - what is wrong with these people!
Mista Weava is right, the government have been very bad at dealing with the major UK problems, very bad indeed! Petrol crisis they were crap, Foot and Mouth they were slow and crap and now with this its like they consider this THAT important.
Sit back and thik about this situation, its a joke, its unbelievalbe that this is even happening - are we in Eastern Europe?
This is the kind of thing you see on the new happening in Russia and we sit back and chuckle at how bad the Russian government are - look at this from a far and the true baddness is very very visable.
Imaging this in the states? - they wouldnt stnad for it out there, again we bend over and take it up the **** from Mr Blair - makes me sick.

@ Dream Weaver - read my post and read yours mate, we are saying the same thing. I think you thought I said they have no choice whereas I actually said the same as you did - they do have a choice.

regards moonlighting
no comment as i am about to finish work and take one of my more industrious of employees to the pub, where we shall convene for a pint, before he works til about 9:30 doing the sh1thouses up!
he better be in by 8 tomorrow though grrrr!
on the subject of the house of lords tom.
i feel they are valuable, as i saw a documentary on them, and most don't have a pot to pi$$ in and are very down to earth.
i have a few older customers that sit in the house of lords as hereditry peers. they are the nicest people to work for. they let you get on with the job (building here, not funerals!) and don't quibble bills, work etc unless they have a valid point.
they all feel that, taking power away from the lords, means that basically if the government has a really silly idea, ahem , then no-one will be able to stop them pushing it thru. more power to president Blair. not good i think we will all agree

These people joined the service knowing the pay. No one forced them into doing it.
Also theres mnay more dangerous jobs.
Maybe the fishermen should strike too
A study by researchers at Oxford University has found people working on the sea are up to 50 times more likely to die while working, compared those in other jobs.
Their jobs are much more hazardous than those in the construction or manufacturing industries and also a lot less safe than working for the police, army or fire brigade.
Most dangerous jobs
1. Fishermen
2. Merchant seafarers
3. Aircraft flight deck officers
4. Railway lengthmen
5. Scaffolders
6. Roofers and glaziers
7. Forestry workers
8. Quarry and other mine workers
9. Dockers and stevedores
10. Lorry drivers

Because presumably they would have been teaching not sleeping, with the approval of their employer, in a dorm provided by the taxpayer.

In the past 3 years alone, price of property has gone bezerk. Petrol? Well, don't hear anyone enjoying that. But what about their pay?
I don't know what sort of hole some people have been living in, but £18k is not a good wage for someone in a skilled job, let alone one where lives are risked to benefit the public.
North sea oil divers work shifts like 4weeks on/off, they can earn something like £400/day, and they risk their lives so we can all burn more petrol.
When was the last time you heard someone demand less money for north sea oil workers to keep petrol prices down?
