Ignorance is no defense. A court would think you were a fool if you did not check a prospective purchase properly. The honous is on you to protect yourself at the end of the day. The Credit compant has every right to reclaim the car as after all it is theirs.
You may be lucky and get your mods back but thats about it the only case you have is against the person who sold you the car but to be honest pursueing this is going to cost a fortune and even if you win the case and get a an order in your favour. What are you going to do when he doesnt cough up ? Start all over again for a breach of a court order etc etc it could go on for years. In reality you are unlikely to get much back in the way of financial compensation the sellers track record says it all. In my opinion a more hands on approach would reap better rewards in this instance. Not that I condone taking the law into my own hands or anything.
Best of luck to you and hope that people will learn a valuable lesson from your misfortune.

I have spoken to citizens advice and the finance company. It looks as if my only option is to try and do a deal with them.I put this to the lady dealing with it and they are going to contact me tomorrow
Since the date they reckon they informed me of the repossession, I have had the car m.o.t'd so they agree that I must not have received the letter.
They agree that anything on the car belongs to me also.
The case has been put on hold for a week.
The payments are not far off two/thirds so that is a bonus I think, they also now have an address for the previous owner

If poss try & see the car before you deal in case they have damaged it whilst breaking in to it. Also find out if you can insist that they remove anything that is yours off the car at their expense, after all they have stolen these items from you and it would appear you have a right to have them returned. the more hassle it causes them the more likely they are to deal.
Seek advise but it may be worth you putting in writing to them a list of all the items they have "stolen" with their value & telling them they all have to be removed from the car etc, again more hassle for them.
