Oh dear. Stop rising to the bait people. However we have become accustomed to the Scoob doing well in these tests so sort it out Subaru and soon. More and more of us will be drifting away including me in January unless the MY02 is somehting special.
By far and away the best bit of the whole article was Peter Wheeler's responses to driving some of the competition - the M3 (too small for a saloon/too big to be a sports car), Noble (too good/too much grip?!) and Elise (admittedly very good but luckily he couldn't fit into it so was able to slag it off anyway).
That man has achieved some great things with TVR but I think he's gone a bit barking in the last 5 years or so.

Bomb to insure no doubt too,
does anyone have any insider info on any bank jobs or the like happening soon? I tote a mean replica hand gun.

The sucessful always take a hammering, and that's what most people have forgotten about the Impreza; it is probably the most successful car of this decade.
A 4 door saloon from a relatively lowly manufaturer, priced at around £20,000 new and with Porsche scaring acceleration and phenomenal traction and grip.
Throw into the mix the impressive rally history and the car was too good to be true.
It got better when the shrewd realised that the STi could be had for the same money giving you awesome road presence and capabilities if you had the head to go the import route.
A great club, extensive modifications backup from a number of major tuning companies, the list goes on...
At the end of the day there are very few Impreza owners that have not been satisfied with the whole ownership experience (only when the expensive P1, seeming less of a bargain and hightening buyers expectations, did things begin to sour slightly in my opinion).
We should take all these "critisisms" as a complement; Impreza owners are targeted purely because of the enormous respect the cars have drawn in their time.
They hold less appeal in the press now because the bubble had to burst at some point and there became less new things to say about the cars.
For what it's worth, I cannot see how a well driven Impreza could be beaten round a track by an equally well driven Elise, this is just from my experience and in all honesty does not include the 2001 WRX range of which I have no direct track experience.
I have driven Elises quite extensively and for outright pace it is just not in the same league as my Impreza, and the handling is just not that much better.
Neil.

Well i personally can't stand the elise cos i can't fit my lardy butt in it, so its got to be a crap car
seriously though, was intrigued to see no mention of the exige in these posts about the autocar test, I would have thought it should have done better than the elise?
Edited just to say to aaron, that we predictably stand up for our scoobs (what do you expect on a scoob site?) you also very predictably come along to stick the boot in.

Okay, how about a test with each car in their element?
Scooby-v-Elise round a track - say 10 laps
Scooby-v-Elise through a forest - say 20 miles.
Need I say more?

Its all a matter of taste and what u want from a car.....I have bad taste so I bought a scoob but I also want a turbo charged 4wd rallybred headbanger.....may change my mind if start to enjoy loose fitting linen clothes and drinking Gin and Tonics and then I'll get an elise
Rich I'd sack Gervaise if I were you How much does he charge ? .
And I know the 'Don Johnson' look would definatley not suit your monster.

In my opinion the elise is a real sports car that takes driver skill to produce good lap times. The scooby is an oversized, overweight, overproduced car for wannabee rally drivers with no driving skill. Even my Granny or a chimp can do a good lap time in a scooby. PS there are more hairdressers driving imprezzas than elises.End of subject.. Jeremy Clarkson

Its called lift off oversteer - its the result of bad driving. The Elise is prone to lift off oversteer because it doesnt rely on electronics to correct a drivers mistake - it just relies on driver skill.
Lift-off oversteer occurs when you are cornering hard and something is parked or pulling out round the bend, forcing you to slow down. The Elise is prone to it because it is a mid-engined car with a short wheelbase meaning you spin very fast (lower polar moment of inertia, plus engine & therefore momentum further back), compared to a medium wheelbase front-engine car (especially one with nice progressive handling) where you oversteer slower and more predictably. Btw what driver aids are you talking about on the scoob? It doesn't have stability or traction control, and some don't have ABS.

They thought it was a 4 star car at first, then after resetting the geometry thought it deserved 4 1/2 stars. So a 1/2 star difference after a change which would make a reasonable difference to the handling. Obviously a fickle bunch eh?

Autocar now give virtually every car they drive four stars, except Korean crap which gets three, and Indian crap that gets two. Nothing gets one star IIRC.

What amazes me (apart from how ridiculous A Bird is - I mean this is a Scooby board for Gaws Sake, what do you expect!)....
...is that no-one has pointed out the fact that the RS Focus with front wheel drive and only 210bhp was faster than the M3 and Evo VII. Must be a seriously well sorted car.
And it's a Ford.
Trout
PS Dave T-S come out with me next time and you too can scream at my driving!

Question for you Scooby bunch : Having spent the weekend charging around the Lakes in my hairdresser special, I was most pleased at the reaction of other drivers. Virtually all pulled-over and let me past (not that I wasn't going past anyway but it does help on the narrower bits). I suspect that Scooby's don't get such favourable reactions ?
Also works on the motorway, coming down the M6 last night I got in convoy with a 911 who wasn't making much impression on the traffic in front of him : he eventually pulled over and let me have a go and the Elise was much more effective ;-)
