Dont know much about classics, but I know they fit any car, you just need to order the kit with correct lamp type.

For the WRX/STi its a H1 stylie.

Assuming your lights are standard, i.e. not Morettes, then you need an H4 kit. This is when the potential problems start......

Talk to Autolamps Online.

The H4 bulb is dual filament, with a separate filament for dip and main beam. It dips the lights by having the two filaments in different places in the bulb capsule, and thus the beam is dipped by it being reflected at a different place on the lamp reflector.

Imagine shining a torch on to a mirror, if you move the torch, the light is reflected off the mirror at a different angle. Same principle.

The HID zenon capsule only uses one filament even in H4 fitment(it's not actually a filament, but for the purposes of this pretend it is). It therefore has to dip the capsule mechanically to achieve dip and main beam which is not ideal, and not an efficient mechanical solution to the problem. However, talk to Autolamps as they know far more about it than me

Another question to add to Lofi's post from the future, or is it only my machine that says it was posted on 10th Dec 2002 ??????

I am confused by the legal position of using the HID H4 Hylow upgrade.
The HID headlight upgrade from Scoobysport doesn't mention it is for off road use only, and I don't think the official Subaru HID Headlight kit includes auto leveling and washers, as the information provided by Nick said it had too.
So why are these kits for 'Off Road Use Only'???

HID Lamps say for off road use only as stated as they are not allowed to sell them as Road Legal as not all cars have leveling headlamps.

About to start - now my head is clear after last night's wine tasting

LoFi
Yes, you need the HiLow kit. I am sure the dip/main must work properly, or they wouldn't sell them. Best check with Autolamps.

From experience, having had a bugeye, the standard headlamps are poor, and as the old saying goes "you can't polish a turd".

You would probably be better off fitting Morettes, which DO work much better, and putting HID in them if you want.

The HID kit is retro removable, HOWEVER the Morettes use an H7 dip beam and the H4 HID will not fit even by swopping the capsules as the HT wiring from the ballast to the capsule is different - so you won't be able to fit H4 HID now, and move it to Morettes in the future

Wester
IIRC, you can't fit HID in Europe unless washers and autolevelling are fitted, so they are sold on the basis of for off road use only. I don't think they are illegal but it is probably a grey area.

LoFi
Re the date, the BBS software reverts to US dates sometimes, when the numbers allow - they use mm/dd/yyyy not dd/mm/yyyy like us.

12 Oct can reverse to 10 December as that is an actual date, but as there is no 13th month the date automatically reverts back to the correct one as the 12th changes to the 13th

Dave,

thanks for the reply. Shame, I think I'll have to leave it for now as the move from standard bugeyes to morettes is not straight forward. Boo Hoo

I'm a bit confused, the 4100K version is the brighter of the 2 kits correct?
The 6000K kit is just a blue version, so why is it more expensive?

Sorry for being so dumb if I've missed the point.

Cheers,

Rob.

That confused me too. The comments in the letter from Nick seems to contradict the web page. I've emailed the address quoted earlier in the thread asking them this question. From a comment above I think they're on hols until 18th so not surprised to not have an answer yet. Anyone else know?

Anybody else pay for the kit and have to wait until now. So far I have paid the money and given interest free credit to the company. I think it would have been better for them to have taken a deposit and not the whole amount. I'm not griping about the group buy, I still think that whatever you get off is great news, its just I only thought about it today when this last post prompted me, but I paid the money and the Company knew that they would be on shut down and did not know when their stock would be in. So I still wait until Monday to know when I'll get the goods, and the money went out the day I ordered.
As I say don't get me wrong, but thinking about it if 5 people ordered and paid £360 a piece, that's £1500 in their account for 3 weeks. (wish my clients did the same)
Anyway gripe over, can't wait to fit them...

As you know they have been in Japan for 2 weeks, I was told that they would supply for Free of Charge some uprated bulbs, if this is not the case please email them asap.

Rob,

Does it really matter?, they obviously cost more as its a better light

I read the thread *properly*, and didn't order mine as they were going to be away for two weeks.....

As for having £1500 in their bank account for a couple of weeks, wow, aren't they going to have a wild party on the 22p interest they have earned on that!

Rob, just a guess at your question as I don't have a clue how these things work but...

If the colour temperature of the light as standard is 4100K then to raise it to 6000K will mean putting some red filtration into the light somehow. This will remove red, add production cost, make the lights look more blue, but actually less bright. Price of fashion. But these things pump out so much light there's still plenty left to see with.

Contrary to popular belief, blue-look lights are not brighter and do not let you see better. Often the reverse. The eye is most sesnitive to yellow/green (colour of those safety jackets). Blue-look lights can be very hard to see with in fog as the water refracts the blue end of the spectrum and it can be almost blinding (opposite of why sunsets are red).

Cheers,

Richard (happy with my 80/100 bulbs for £12 a pair)

Thumbs up

On that last question, I'd give Hella UK a ring on monday, and ask to speak to technical helpline. They are pretty clued up, and very helpful.

Gents,

Sorry for the two week delay but the show and exhibition in Asia is the biggest of the year for us and takes significant time , money and resources.

However back and now fully operational again so any questions, problems or queries fire away either directly or on this forum. This can be applicable to either HID or halogen technology
