I have not got a car anymore so i challenge you all to a race anytime you want - cause i am faster My new Nike airs with funny plastic bits on them get the power down quicker - your dunlops etc are to slow especially round the twisties! They did cost me £65 but you could get a pair of dunlops for £20 and max them with your own plastic bits for half the price!! But your reliability will suffer Santa Pod anyone? (although being 600 miles away it will take me a few months to get there).

Wolfie,

It's the torque that limits the gearbox, not power. Nitrous makes more power at low revs so more torque. Don't worry, there are loads of mini boxes around, and it's easy to swap, you'll get plenty of practice!

Nitrous isn't cheating, go get some slicks and have a laugh

Have to say that that is one piece of idiotic driving, attempting to race whenever there is so much traffic on the road. Did it ever occur that the subaru driver maybe wised up, realizing that what he was doing was very stupid, and let off. Also, if your car is sooooooo fast, maybe im wrong, but who was in front the whole time??? Almost cathcing up one someone isnt winning a race, I believe the winner is usually in front. I am not saying that subarus are unbeatable, as to be honest a standard one is pretty slow. Just that your car is not as fast as you seem to think.
You beat a 320bhp cossie... yet a 360bhp car makes you look silly . so 40bhp makes so much of a difference that it makes you and your car look slow...at that level, 40bhp isnt that noticeable. Stop talking bollox. I have a mini that would eat **** of your poxy cabrio, and a lot of subarus. I have never seen a fwd ford escort that I would regard as fast. I have read about perhaps 2 or 3 in the country, that are, but yours isnt one of them.

Nice WoIfie. Used to run a 1380 turbo unit, built myself, 12psi across range. Straight cut box (stripped 3rd gear on new std box !) Modded the idler gear to run a much larger bearing and rerouted return to feed idler (mate does have a workshop ) Found could manage without straight cut drop gears as a result - much quieter Only thing didn't get round to doing was installing intercooler and it needed it. In retrospect wouldn't take it out to 1380. Too much blowby. Also had to drop pistons well down from the deck to get the compression low enough. Again not ideal and with 1275 could have run flush with the deck with the pistons available.
Would really like to do it again. Let me know how you get on with your unit. Reckon you might stuggle to get 200bhp reliably.

Wolfie...
Go for a Swiftune modified head, best you can afford. SW5 camshaft, hi lift rockers. 0.36 exhaust housing with cossie compressor wheel.
Get an intercooler, sort the fuelling, 20psi, and bobs ur uncle.
It willl eat boxes and diffs, I reccomend Tran-X for both gear sets and X-pin diff. Then the gear casing is the weak link, as the centre web crakc from time to time.
Ive never had any problems with drop gears or driveshafts., and I am using a 3.1:1 diff, which with 13" wheels, will rev to 7500 in 4th, which is a very silly speed in a mini.

Stevieturbo, u had good experience with SwiftTune ? Maybe my very bad experience was a one off but I wouldn't go back there.
My recommendation would be MiniSprint in Leicester. Ian Hargreaves is the boss and one of the best Engineers i've met.

P1 Fanatic,

The noise you're referring to is turbo chatter. It's commonly and mistakenly called wastegate chatter, but is actually the sound of the air being chopped up by the turbo blades, as air rushes back in under vacuum.

Having a dump valve usually negates most of this, as is intended in removing turbo stall, but most people should realise that the d/v is irrelevant unless running massive boost pressures (not starting a d/v topic here)

Thumbs up

Scoobys = Good Cars
RSs = Good Cars
Lots of other "generic" cars like vectras, Lagunas, 318is etc = c@ck!

Nuff said, its all down to personal taste really, I have a stack of mates with Scoobs ranging from R plate standard UK jobs to brand spanker UK STIs and they are very nice motors indeed but I chose to drive a turboed cabrio like Alex's (tho not as quick as his!) not because Im skint or something (Im actually a IT bloke like your stereotypical Scoob owner ) but because I like the simplicity of the Ford and enjoy messing about and modding it - its my creation!. Im sure Alex would be the first to admit that any scoob could have him in the twistys, but to get a 15 year old car to keep up with todays benchmark performance road car (which the scoob clearly is) does deserve a little respect. Alex's car has whats known as a ZVH engine which is a clever hybrid of a standard RS Turbo 1600 cc head and the modern 2 litre "Zetec" cylinder block from a Mondeo. Its clever stuff and if your a pure car modding / techie enthusiast you'll appreciate the work that went into developing such a beast (if your interested in learning more goto http://www.jimhearne.co.uk/zvh.htm ).

So come on scoob boys, lets all chill - there are @$$holes that drive both fords and scoobs but Im sure the majority of us are just car enthusiasts and just love good cars and quality engineering - variety is the spice of life and all that!

I'll go back to the RSOC now (well actually to my local club as Ive had a few jars here )

Dan,

I dont think Alex is saying Bailey are the best dump valves full stop, the likes of Greddy and HKS do much better ones, but the Bailey twin piston one is best for the Escort RS turbo with Bosch K -Jectronic fuel injection as it has an air mass measuring fuel injection system. This means that if you use a dump valve that allows air to be sucked in after the airflow meter (as most do) your mixture will be wrong. The Bailey "Evo" twin piston unit is designed specifically not to leat air in and is thus very suitable for the RS Turbo engine. What you say about dump valves is all very true however a lot of people far more clever than me have run a lot of tests that have proved that dump valves are not really required unless your running the kind of boost pressures you might find in your tyres!!. Thus for modded road cars like our RSs and scoobs (i.e. < 30 PSI) they are just a noisy toy really).

The scoob has an air flow meter too... the jap make dump valves have to cater for cars with air flow meters...i.e mazda rx7, celica, impreza, skyline e.t.c

The likes of blitz, HKS e.t.c have a twin piston design, thats what bailey based there DV26 on which have only been out a few years.....

There is no reason a jap DV cant be fitted to a non jap car, i recently sold my blitz SS dump valve to a lad with and Renault 5 turbo..

If they are not necessary whay are they fitted from standard..?????? i think subaru and the likes do there research.

Dan

Cool

Hmm thats interesting Dan - perhaps its something to do with the rest of the system. The RS Turbos fuel injection system is very simple compared to a scoob etc, it is continuous, in that the injectors spray continously into the inlet ports while Im sure scoobs etc will have injectors that open on inlet stroke etc. That makes it sound a bit cack but its simplicity does make it reliable. As for Renaults I thought they ran a carb? so who knows what happens with them.

Whatever the fact is I can vouch for the fact that running a DV makes pick up on an RS Turbo worse, but I keep mine as I like the sound , the only RS owners that really NEED a dump valve are RS500 people who have a huge T4 Garrett turbo and run insane boost pressures (obviously they have huge lag though unless they have anti lag .

I will have to ask on the RSOC what other types of DV people run, you may be right .

Perhaps they are standard on scoobs at they have smaller turbos than RS Turbos and perhaps they are more easily damaged??, the RS Turbo has a large turbo for its size as its motorsprt derived and the big T3 was selected for top end power as opposed to the scoobs smaller unit which is optimised for less lag??

T3 and similar sizes will not stall when you close the throttle, due to the volume of air they can actually flow.

... and if your wastegate chatters, it's time for you to buy a new turbo!!!!!!!!!

Alex,

Finally managed a successful "was it you" (despite being in the wrong forum). What exhaust has your mate got? I was seriously tempted to follow him for a while and flag him down, but I'd just come back from a very hard weekend and wanted to get home.
