Agree with you both..

Difficult to judge whether his excessive force was justified...
or whether 99% of us would do the same.. I don't think I would have gone for a knife but then I might have been the one dead rather than on trail...

No but I wouldn't stab him 12 times in the back... and also he was not in the childs bedroom, if I recall the story correctly.
If he had hold of a child then I see killing the guy by any means understandable..

I agree that his rights should be removed as he broke in but that is not the law currently..

He had a crowbar in his hand that he broke in with.. he couldn't have been wielding it else he would have be stabbed in the chest, shoulder, stomach.. surely?

Glad that one less burgular is committing crimes but the fact remains that stabbing him in the back 12times was flipping excessive force..

Once again, proof that the English justice systems places NO value on defending one's self - sad, really. I think it's a tragedy that a man's life has been destroyed by someone looking to make a quick buck through stealing..

Stabbed him 12 times extreme? Well, since you have NO other facts, at least from that article, making any kind of judgement is ludicrous - there's no mention of how the attacks occurred - no statement that he just snuck up and stabbed the burglar in the back. Could it be that the burglar grappled the fellow, and the back was the only open lane of attack? Could it be they were wrestling on the floor? Who knows. The man had numerous convictions, and was on the run from the police - doesn't that rather paint a portrait of a desperate man?

In the state I live in, I exercise my right to carry a concealed firearm - and anyone intruding into my home does so at their own peril. The American justice system, while bloated with lawyers, liberals, and overly litigenous plantiffs, still allows people to defend themselves - it's not perfect by any means, but at least I don't have to rely on the state to defend me in my home.

My point? When the system prohibits you from defending yourself, and can't do anything to defend you, it's time for a new system. No offense, but I put the lives of myself and my family over a career criminal who's broken into my home.

for me to fully explain the impact on our society if cases like this resulted in no prosecution so why don't you all actually think for a second about what would happen if we all had license to kill people when we felt threatend bearing in mind that dead people find it hard to convey their side of the story.

Just take the time (and I mean this quite sincerely) to put yourself in the position of the home owner. Nobody, not even you would know exactly what you would have done if put in the position of that poor guy.

I saw this blokes mother on daytime tv and she was trying to claim that her son had stabbbed him in the back as he was standing infront because he was taller !!!!!!!!!
Something just didnt add up he also kept stabbing him even when he was outside on the pavement.
Protecting inside the home is one thing chasing and stabbing someone in the back on the pavement is something different altogether

 

The guy was a idiot to believe he would get away with it. He murdered the thief full stop.

 

So most of you think murder is an acceptable punishment for theft now is it ?
