Just for your information the colour is called "Crystal Blue" and was a standard Ford colour back in 1987 (limited to that model year of Cosworth). However, with regard to his emulation of an Impreza, as they say - there's no accounting for taste....

The only reason Mike has crashed is 'cos he only puts his foot down in a straight line. Otherwise the results would speak for themselves (much like his 1/4 mile times). And I'd imagine just as many excuses would follow!

Does anyone know why he crashed? It couldn't have been 'cos he had 2WD and too much power. Perhaps Mike could give him some tips or is the only reason Mike hasn't crashed his car yet is that it's always broken and never on the road.

Apparantly he crashed because he lost all his brakes - upon approaching the corner the pedal just went straight to the floor (gulp!) and to avoid hitting the car in front he had to slam the car into second gear (which obviously locked the wheels up) and try and control the slide as best he could. However, he hit the gravel trap sideways and suddenly it went sky, gravel, sky, gravel as the car barrel rolled.....

And if 4wd is for girls who don't crash (or break down!) why don't you check out Mike123's posting - I think you'll find anyone can crash anything (and even Scoobies break down) - again, not that I'm gloating or anything!

My tip to avoid crashing would be buy some decent brakes (AP Racing 4 pots and 330mm (13"!) front discs - £1,350) and a decent suspension set up (the sky is the limit on this one!) and KNOW your limits....

I wonder if you'll be so "lippy" when in the car going sideways (in 2nd at 50+mph) in the dry (or wheelspinning in 5th at 120+mph in the wet - getting it a bit squirelly in the words of Kevin Schwantz!). I look forward to "enlightening" you as to what a Cossie is all about (that is if you're not chicken....!

I know what a Cossie is about. Unfortunately I've grown up since then and things have moved on!
If your car wheelspins in 5th at 120mph, I can only question it's inefficiency.
I wouldn't mind going out in your car - as long as you can find someone with the ability to handle it!
If I do meet you on the track, pray it's:

a. not too twisty
b. not wet
c. not long so the engine doesn't blow
d. not able to be spectated on so you don't lose so much face
e. has plenty of breakdown facilities

Yes I've seen it. It just goes to show that even if you have one of the best handling cars in the world (bold statement!) and are a crap driver you can still have a big off. Then again mix a crap car AND driver (Cossie+boy racer=BIG crash) and I'm sure the chaos begins a lot sooner...
As for reliability perhaps the 22B was heavily tuned and we all know how reliable heavily tuned cars are...don't we Mike

 

Oi, you lot leave poor mike alone! He's only trying to talk about cars, cause he's a petrol head. I thought we were as well! Apolgies if I'm not getting the joke but it all looks a bit nasty.

Anyway the reason for the post in the first place. Mike, does a 2wd cossie have bonnet vents? I saw what looked like a cossie ( well it had a cosworth badge on the back anyway)and it didn't have vents. Was it a dodgy copy or 2wd?

2WD Sapphire Cossies didn't have bonnet vents as standard only the girly 4WD's had them factory fitted but plenty of owner's of 2WD's fit the later bonnets for that vented girly look. Hmmmm admitting to Cossie knowledge... what ever will people think

The only reason the car spins its wheels in 5th in the wet is because it has got SO much torque. However, even in the dry first and second (and sometimes even third!) are absolutely useless if the tyres are cold, or you boot the accelerator at slow speeds. This is because as SOON as it hits 3500 revs it has over 400 lb ft of torque fighting (and failing this time of year!) to get a grip on the road.

With regard to being able to handle it, I've had the car six years and not stacked it yet (having said that now, I'll probably go and do it within the next few weeks!).

With regard to track days and you and your car:
a) Only on a Kart track where I couldn't get out of 2nd gear would it be an issue.
b) Granted.
c) Hasn't happened yet, and I have spent too much money on protecting the engine (Big wing baffled sump, Laminova water-cooled oil cooler, water injection, WRC head gasket etc etc...) for it to be a feasible possiblity - your standard car would be more likely to go bang first, as I have invested in things to make mine reliable on track days.....
d) As you can see - I own a Cossie and looking at the derision I get (all in good taste of course) on this site, do you really think this would worry me!?
e) Always driven home from "proper" track days so far (as you all say, Santa Pod isn't a true measure of a car's ability on the track etc.)

I hate to admit it, but Weaver has actually given you some correct information
(as opposed to his usual bollocks ). 2wd Sapphires were produced from 1987 to 1990 and 4x4s from 1990 to 1993. The 2wd did not have the vented bonnets. However if they are modified, then they really do need them, as this lets out loads of heat (thats my excuse for having one on my 2wd anyway!).

With regard to the thread, what you should do is read the whole lot from the beginning and then you will see that it is just for fun... No malace intended (not on my part anyway ).

i agree with mike on the wheel spin, my 2WD has 340Lb/ft of torque and will spin in 5th at 100MPH in the wet. I dont have a girlie 4x4 bonnet though.
As for reliability, my cossie 4x4 Group A rally car is almost 100% reliable now. Mind you we have got a 9" rear diff, 7.5" front diff, 50/50 torque split and magnesium suspension allround.
The engine is about 320BHP because of the FIA 32mm turbo restrictor but a stonking 450 Lb/ft of torque.
Our only week link this year has been 1 gearbox failure after 3 years on the same box.
Not bad for an "unreliable cossie"

More like both feet...sorry folks. Must of been due to thinking about Cossies, it reduces your IQ and you start wanting to talk about having 40psi of boost,going in a straight line and not round corners, 4WD being for girls etc,etc..
