As other people have said.
Run it in properly, it will save the engine.
Fuel it well.
Wait for it to loosen up, I noticed the difference when the milage increased.
ITG air filters do help to smooth out the boost curve.
A better back box will give throater sound and free up the gas flow.
PPP will increase power, torque and remove one of the nasty cats.![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Full de-catting the '01/'02 will cause you warrenty to fly out of the window.
All the mods I have mentioned are completely warrenty safe.
As for the new shape being heavier... well yes it is but then the build quality has been improved, the car is stiffer (no need to add extra strut braces (and weight)), it has an intergral roll cage and air con! These do add up.
Of course you can get lighter and stonger wheels and shed the weight very easily. Unsprung/rotational weight is what you should look at reducing first.
Above everything else.... enjoy the car!![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

The point is power to weight if it increased by 150kgs then why didnt it have 250bhp as standard. Yes strengthen it, add strut braces improve the brakes, but as a standard showroom package it doesnt have it. I worked out it going to cost 3K+ on top for me personally to get it how I would have wanted it from the showroom (PPP, full exhaust, front lights, rear spoiler, lowered suspension) which probably means my warranty would be screwed and it still wouldnt be as quick in straight line performance as my MY00
.

There was a big improvement after I removed all three cats on my MY01. Power increased 28bhp all over the rpm range, but torque hardly improved.
Last week I changed the standard ECU and I went the Link way and the car feels really fast, the midrange is awesome.
My brother owns a unmodified STI 7 and he feels my car is faster than his, after all the modifications I made.
Cheers

It may not 'seem' as fast as your 'old' MY00 model m8 but it sure wins in the style and looks department - especially if you go for the headlamp conversion - sweeeeet. Stop griping, my 88 sierra cosworth was faster but I wouldnt be seen dead in it now - get with it, Its only a question of time!

True... I remember my first meet.... people commenting they didn't like the car, the only 01 there, now some of the people have 01s.
The car does grow on people and it must be said I do have an alternative colour which never helped.
One of the mods I am getting soon will save me around 154kgs (11kgs of rotational weight), with all the other mods...

No doubt about it, 150kgs is a LOT of weight - I'm 75kg so thats like having 2 people permanantly aboard!
As you might have guessed, ive got a 00my, and yes i do think the new WRX is a bit slow. However i still think the WRX is a bloody good car to drive despite the lack of poke. Subaru has deliberately made the WRX more civilised in order to broaden its appeal - remember if you step into the WRX from a top of the range vectra or mondeo, it feels like a quick car but still retains the practicality. The STI is there to satisfy us enthusiasts.
My problem with the WRX is that those pesky little Clio 172's offer identical performance! Mind u even in a 00my they take more effort than you would think to get away from em. respect due!

its no secret that the wrx is not as lively or wild as the classic(i would say that), but the feeling is that it will tune/mod better and more responsive than the classic(hope not).... having test driven the wrx and comparing it to my99 , all be it fully prodrived (etc etc) out.... i felt that the build was better on the wrx...but no where near the rush factor...run it in...its like a tight young school girl...its a little tight at first and maybe not that much fun...but once they loosen up....yyyeeeaaahhhhhaa.. god bless subaru and all who fly in them***** can i have an amen......
