I got my info from a Sunday Times colour supplement a while back.

According to that article, they were worried about terrorists detonating a hand grenade so, to make absolutely sure they were dead and not injured, they unloaded an entire mag each. One of the terrorists died with a grenade in his hand.

I'm also aware that this isn't a normal tactic (I'm a weapons intructor in the TA), but the siege was not a normal scenario. Also, any FIBUA (Fighting In Built Up Areas) operation requires a lot of ammunition and SAS guys are more than fit enough to carry lots of ammunition. Modern tactics (now Operations in Built Up Areas) use much less ammunition, but we are talking 20 years ago.

I wish I had seen this program now, I had read the book as well at that was a very interesting read.

I feel a little sorry for the personnel in the SBS... they never get any of the limelight!

I'm with Jerome on this one - I am ex-mil myself and have done truckloads of FIBUA training - although in general, highly trained soldiers don't waste ammo, in FIBUA situations, where in-building fighting is concerned at close quarters, then you simply let off as many rounds as you think you need to drop the target. Using 5.56 rounds a man takes a while to drop (apparently - I don't claim to ave actually witnessed this but have spoken to people who have), so I don't expect they skimped on ammo (not sure what MP5s take, perhaps its 7.62 ammo?). Plus, those guys wouldn't have been carrying much else APART from ammo, flashbangs and explosives, so I don't expect they ran out of rounds too quickly.

MP5 uses 9mm usually, though can take .40 or 10mm, though I have no idea who would use them in this configuration - SEAL teams perhaps?

Also saw the programme.

If you saw these guys in the street you would not look at them twice as outside of there enviroment they just blend in.

They are probably still the best fighting force in the world but no doubt this goverment will soon put a stop to that and make sure that they are prosecuted for killing terrorists, whilst at the same time letting the terrorists go,( the ones that didn't get killed that is).

I know people that, whilst in the services, went on training courses that were run by the SAS and they could not believe how fit, dedicated and professional that these guys are.

Pity we can't clone Maggie to get a PM with some ***** back in the job!

The MP5SD, which AFAIK is the one the SAS use (built in silencer thinghy) uses 9mmx19 ammo.

sorry for the poo spelling .... anyways.

Breznev took Afghanistan
Begin took Beruit
Galtieri took the Union Jack
Then over lunch one day,
maggie sunk a cruiser with all hands,
apparently to make him give it back...

Nice tune from Mr Roger Waters about the Falklands...

Sums up maggie though

The .40 and 10mm configurations were requested from Heckler and Koch by the FBI apparently.

It was the best hour and a half of TV for some time. Might have to watch "Who Dares Wins" with Lewis Collins when I get in. Remember that film? Slow boil suspense to a really entertaining last fifteen minutes.

I am in awe of any professional soldier, be it land, sea of air, for doing a job I wish I had the bottle for.

What a good programme !!

Gripping stuff and I sort remember it happening as a tot...

Great to see the no nonsense attitude of government back then - so refreshing when compared to today !!!

~Like the comment from the head SAS bod - "Message to terrorists - if you come to our country and start killing people - you won't go home alive !!" Kind of different to the message you get nowadays from Tony and his boys... "If you come to our country, you can probably do what you want 'cos no-one even knows you're here !!"

Good stuff !!

Cheers,

John

I remember hearing on the radio( Mike Dickens??) After the raid ..so many people claimed to have been a member of the team or knew one that they worked out that the team would have been about 5000 strong........
So many dreamers!!
