Adam, your probably the reason why it's hard to get through to RC because your on the phone picking Clives brain
I said this car was close on 400bhp and it is fast. Ask Clive for the spec he's done all of the work on it.
I am collecting my car tomorrow now so I'll let you know how it is.
I don't suppose 400BHP is bad for a Subaru non-expert?

I happen to own a near stock Aus MY00 with FMIC, I have a 3" turbo back exhuast (APEX'i RS), boost running at 16PSI in 4th and 5th via a turbosmart controller and a Tube and Fin FMIC.

My observations have been the following;

The biggest difference felt has been with the Exhaust System, this was an incredible change. I still have a High flow Cat in the exhaust system but further down the exhaust.

The FMIC is a big change, but the power is mis-felt due to the poor flow characteristics of the TD04. Given the _fact_ that it does make more power due to the cooler air, and you can feel this difference, the fact remains that the TD04 cannot fill the added volume of the FMIC and associated piping up quick enough IMHO. A small / medium IHI VF series turbo would completely fix this small problem.

Also on the point whether to go for a larger Turbo or an FMIC remember that the FMIC will dissapate more heat out of the system, but the larger turbo will _generally_ produce less heat when keeping the air flow the same as the standard TD04, this is due to the larger turbo being able to a) produce more airflow at a lower pressure and b) being more efficient at the higher pressures it will be less prone to _adding_ in extra temperature.

So which to go for? Which ever you feel is the best for you at the time.

Brett

must admit, it is a bloody nightmare getting through to RC, but thats cos jenny likes to chat to people! such a lovely girl. It certainly isnt cos I am picking clives brains.

Mark,

When your brain is as quick as mine, and has to process what is going on in there, you will see the break donw in commuincation between brain and fingers. Actually you wont, as your brain will never be quicker.

I agree with Brett

Harvey,

no problems mate - wasn't trying to diss you in anyway - maybe just read your original post as a bit prescriptive - which I am sure is my fault.

Trout

PS Personally would still do FMIC last.

Thumbs up

Hi Trout: I had no prob with your post in anyway. It gave an alternative perspective and something else for those thinking about modding their cars to consider.
Your suggestion would certainly be a quicker +cheaper way to 340+ bhp (obviously done properly) but you will now realise I wanted to exceed that figure and part of the interest was looking at each mod in isolation. Might not be everybodies cup of tea!!! Cheers.
(PS. Starting point is STi)

Adam,

Given your reputation for the "Five finger shuffle", and the amount of time you spend practicing it, I'm surprised at the lack of comunication between brain, and digits.......

However, you're right, I'll NEVER be as quick as you are !!! but that comes with age, and real life experience. I've told you before, you can read all the books, and "magazines" you want, but until you actually start putting your new found knowledge into practice, it's just theory !!!!!!

Mark.

Wink

But Mark,

Adam's been practicing the "Five Finger Shuffle" for so long and at such a frequency that he has now built up some impressive "muscle memory" and he doesn't need much braid -> digit co-ordination. His hands just work by themselves these days....

Matt

P.S. Can we get back to FMIC's so time soon?

what is it with all you freaks with five fingers?

I have four fingers and a thumb.

Mark, I had such a brilliant come back there, but unfortunately it goes beyond the limits of what the moderators will allow.

Damn it was good! the kind that you look back on and think, I wish I had said that! you'll just have to trust me, and act beaten.

Matt, stop brown nosing.

I think this thread has done what it was supposed to by now anyway.

fit bigger turbo
fit fmic later. there done!

Come on Adam et al, the correct sequence is fit bigger turbo AND FMIC, and injectors, and fuel pump and management etc etc because what ever you do when will need something else in addition.

Mark ... do tell !!!

cheers

Alan, HKS I see, but the pipes aren't standard finish...did you get stainless ones made or polish up the original painted mild steel ones then get them laquered?

They were hand made out of Stainless Steel by RC Developments

Just a thought, the pipe from the turbo to the inlet of the ic has to do a 270 degree turn before it even starts to reach the ic. Would it not be better to take this pipe straight across the back of the engine and then down to the ic, with the other pipe (ic to the inlet manifold) going in the other direction ( to the left side as it where). This may be a longer route but surely the loss of this severe bend would more than compensate. Im only asking because im doing my own with an evo 5 ic and cant see a reason for this extra and hard to make bend.
Cheers Ad.

Cool

HKS and APS flow their air through the FMIC in oposite directions.
The HKS disadvantage is the need to turn in quite a sharp radius through a large angle.
The APS disadvantage is that the already cooled air passes close over the top of the turbo and down pipe on its way into the throttle body so it will pick up a marginal heating effect.
BTW my APS FMIC runs in the cruise up to 4k rpm at ambient + 2or 3 centigrade.

Harvey,

sorry we didn't get to say hello on Sunday. Some punters have lagged the pipe going over the turbo with that shiny wrap!

HKS FMIC seems work quite well - even with the big bends. Subjectively my car seems to have little or no downside - and will shorlty be objectively measured.

I went with the HKS because I preferred the pipework. Saying that I am scrapping the 270 twist mentioned above, but I dont think it causes a significant restriction. So long as its a smooth end which it is, and lamina flow is maintained, I dont see why its a problem at all.
