Lads,

I realise you might like the long 5th but for me the 2 door shell/look is the one to have. I've got a V5 Type R V-Ltd on a T plate. It's on Gold 17" P1 rims and looks a million. Makes me smile everytime I open the garage! You're right. As std. the Type R hasn't got the quick rack and there is no big drop into 5th, just 5 more closely packed ratios, due to the lower final drive (4.44:1)?!!!, rather than 4.1:1 or UK 3.9:1.

Going to get the following mods in the next two months:-

Full Magnex Decat
new 4th/5th gear synchro!!
Eibachs
Bumpsteer
Castor blocks
K&N Induction Kit
Link ECU
3 Autometer Gauge Pod
Turbo timer
Dumpvalve (not sure which yet. Any ideas?)

And a good thrashing!

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Daver

If being a freak means i can do the stuff i do, then i am happy to be that.

Looking forward to stripping down my gearbox now, i guess thats quite a freaky type of thing to look forward to too.

ok,
am going to go out on a limb here.

all type rs and type ras with r180 rear diff (ie 2 pots etc) have a final drive of 4.44.

the only ones that dont are uk 22Bs.

I know this because trying to source a crown wheel and pinion for the bloody thing is like flogging a dead horse.

I have found them eventually, btu they are lifted off another car!

incidentally,

although previously unavailable would any R180 rear diff owners (most of us on this thread) be interested in a quaife atb for the rear diff?

quaife think it doesnt exist, but I have a strong suspicion they already make it! just wondered if it is worth doing the research whether any one else would appreciate this mod.

already have one going in the front.

surely quaife know what diffs they make! LOL

Nope, i like the fact the rear diff locks the way it does, means you can do proper power slides on track.

I just had a chat with someone who should know, and he says mine will defo have a front LSD. He also says he has seen other STi 5's with my gearset config. He says there are 3 diferent types of STi5 box he has come accross! He thinks its more likely that its been put in due to production runs not having the 5th gear from the Type R available at the time the box was built, i am not so sure about that one myself.

I have asked the original importors to see if they have a spec sheet for the car when it was imported (it was brand new) just to see if any options were listed. It's a long shot but i am intrigued now!

Mine is definitely a freak then as it has ABS and no centre diff and a final drive of 20mph/1000rpm. Okay it doesnt have the little STI logos but it still manages 1.2bar on a VF29 . Must be good for 215bhp .

Just out of interest, my Type R doesnt do much over 110mph in 4th, and Im pretty sure it wouldnt reach 150mph in top.
Damn 180kph speedo doesnt help, but 150mph sounds too much for my car...let alone 180mph!!!

just do a simple test. Take it to 4000rpm in each gear and log what the speedo reads. Devide that by 4 and you have the speed per 1000rpm for each gear, then multiply it by 8.25 and you have top speed for each gear on an STi, multiply it by 7.5 and you have top speed on a non STi like chrisp's, easy peasy!

John, out of interest I ran the 1/4 mile in my car on the weekend and the car passed the traps at a recorded speed of 173kph (108mph)
but the speedo was reading 180kph (112.5mph), surely this must affect this calculation quite considerably??

thats a 4% diference, fairly acurate actually!

It's only a guide, it's close enough to get an idea of the gearing though.

How does your car pull from 3000 revs in 5th John?? I have always been interested in getting my 5th changed to conserve petrol and make it a little more manageable on motorways etc....

Like a train. It's not going to be as quick as a lower geared car obviously, but it's still pretty impresive, much faster than a UK turbo in 4th i would say!

The only time i have had chance to try it so far in anger was at castle combe last week, i dont do silly speeds on the public road so 5th is just for cruising as regards daily use. I never went out of 4th or 5th gear, didnt use 3rd at all. I was taking it to 7900rpm in 4th then holding 5th up to about 135MPH on the main pits straight, MY in his Gems and lower 5th gear speced car didnt leave me much at all to be honest, he was probably 2 seconds a lap faster. I was being very gentle on the car as it was my first track action in it and didnt want to kill my tyres etc.

It's hard to use MY as a fair comparison as he has 60BHP more and a lower 5th gear, FMIC etc so his car is faster just from an engine side of things.

I'll have a better idea after my trip to the ring in a couple of weeks time, i should be able to get it to 155MPH down the foxhole if the car feels stable enough to start pushing it.

I had a call from Park Lane who imported the car new, it's a standard spec STi5 TypeRA V-Ltd, there were no options specified. They have serviced the car from new and have not modified anything on the car. Now as Scott had a special order box, that doesnt really help find out whats going on here, we need to find another V-Limited to see what that has. There must be someone on this board with one surely?
