The reaction actually make quite a lot of sense. The virus itself is mostly harmless and not much to worry about, but the resultant strain on the already overloaded health system is the real problem. If they can delay the infection rate and prolong mass infection until the summer, then the NHS will be better able to cope with those who do need hospital treatment. In the winter the NHS already struggles with all the seasonal flu cases, when you then add all the COVID-19 cases on top, then the NHS won't be able to cope and more people will die as a result.

Covid19 is running around 3% mortality, and people love pushing out the fact that 1000 people died from flu, or were hit by cars etc, but what has that got to do with covid19? Nothing! We have a flu vaccine, and as such, a very limited number of people catch it. Potentialyl, all of the the UK population could catch covid19, it's brand new, so no herd immunity, no vaccine, so 3% of 67 odd millions is just over 2 million, which is really quite serious. Add to that the fact that you will have an overloaded and understaffed health service, and the economic cost, it's not an overreaction at all.

OK, it's unlikely everyone will catch it, but if even a third of the people catch it, it's really not very good.

Just to add, Spanish flu started off as a mild one.........

I commented on this thread early on, I've not read every post, but the level of complacency on show from some is shocking.

The World Health Organization does not declare a global health emergency for no reason, the Italian government do not take the extraordinary steps they have for no reason.

Literally the only good thing about it is i don't have to read about Brexit anymore.

If the advice is heeded, then the spread of the disease may be sufficiently restricted such that the hospitals can cope with the number of people needing treatment.

If the advice is non headed, then the hospitals will quickly become overloaded with cases and they cannot cope with either corona cases or existing medical treatments. This is what is happening in Italy right now and the Italian government was slow to react to the cases in Northern Italy and hence Italy is seeing a greater number of deaths and intensive care cases than other parts of the world have seen.

We have zero hope of avoiding this thing, but the more we can slow the spread the better!

i totally agree. The press has hyped this up beyond all reasonable thinking, however the lessons being learnt now will be invaluable when something really nasty like ebola goes world wide.

Indeed, hype or no hype, it highlighted how unprepared we are and the sheer incompetence displayed by those operating at our ports of entry.

We’re an island, so geographically speaking had a huge advantage. But no, jobsworths at airports just waved through passengers from China at the first point of this starting with nothing more than a pathetic leaflet. And even when Italy went into total lock down UK airports still waved through passengers arriving from Italy without any proper checks or interrogation.

Oh well, we’ve all watched the resident evil films, we know how that ends.

( reminds me...I need to find the firing pins for my shotgun, in case I’m attacked by swathes of morons trying to nick my bog roll )

Oh yes...medical advice on frequent washing of your hands and don’t touch your face...good stuff (The same best advice I had when I was a teen with infected acne ).

But seeing it lives on surfaces for several days, there is something that you handle repeatedly throughout the day that can get infected and as such transfer back onto your hands...

Your mobile phone!!

Seeing every person and their dog is glued to the damn things, this has to be a large key into carrying the virus, if the virus gets onto your hands inbetween washing, then it likely to transfer to your phone and subsequently gets back on to your hands after washing because it’s still living on the surface of the phone!

Sadly I think we’ll all be getting it at some point.

I wonder how much this spread has to do with nature (well everything) what I mean is people keep having flu vaccinations and then we end up with something that’s a worse version of a flu to kill off the people that are being immunised against flu.

I can’t see there’s any avoiding it at this stage, and I don’t want to be saying that as I fear my mum won’t survive it (leukaemia survivor with a weakened immune system)


My GF is a nurse and has been doing the swabbing for it in the community, it’s like something from CSI

Watch Joe Rogan with the expert. He is telling us how it really is. Face masks washing hands etc will not help you. This is the government making us feel like we can do something to help. It will come to a point on deciding who gets what little medicine is left or die (for suffers that get worst hit). Some people will just get mild flue others will die. We must look after are health care workers first. Hopefully as an island we have stock piled the medicine and masks etc. The US are in the **** as they have no stock of medicines the only have enough for a few days at a time.

The health care system could collapse in days if things did get bad. My GF is a nurse in the community, palliative care, giving people their life extending medicine daily, diabetes meds daily to many people who can’t get out the house etc.

As I said, she’s been swabbing potential carriers... Can just imagine her getting sick then the whole team she runs has been exposed to her and then what? They going to start employing joe bloggs off the street to dish out health care. It could be a right mess all this.

The first thing I’d have done would be setup dedicated covid 19 check teams that self isolate during the coming months. Not giving the community nurses the jobs on a rota so they all get to dabble in it FFS!

We will all get it. What has to be done now is slow the rate of transmission so that it is manageable although it will prolong the whole saga. It won’t be manageable if everyone all gets it within the same month, so those who are weak that do get infected won’t get the support they may need.

Pretty certain round here it’s got into the chain of careworkers. Be it home carers or care homes, which may explain the elderly deaths that are local to me of which haven’t travelled anywhere. Unfortunately details of precise locations and situational circumstances of local infections are being kept well guarded from the public. Probably to stop panic and apportioning blame on stereotypes. For example there are chains of care homes round here that are staffed by Chinese migrant care workers, as such it is very easy throw blame on a carrier when they may be unaware they have it or are under pressure to work for financial reasons, as well as slave labour which is a also bit of issue round here.

No I rather listen to the expert talking sense on his show. Have you watched it is an eye opener? Washing hands has no effect on an air borne virus. If I have it and your next to me washing your hands and I breath on you how does that help you. Smoke bloke talks lol. I guess you rather listen to the media.

Washing hands may slow it down and is generally a good idea for this and others but it will not stop you getting it is my point. The government are not telling us the whole story and need the people to think they can do something. Your still going to more than likely get it if the spread is not contained which as the expert said is like trying to stop the wind.
