Why is this headline news on every outlet?
Today it was headline news that 100 people had died as a result of this new virus since it was identified. (of course very sad for those affected). Most of those who died had underlying medical problems and would have struggled with the flu etc.
Did you know that 260,000 people die in China each year as a result of road accidents? That's over 700 per day.
Can you imagine the headlines if the virus was killing 700 per day!
I'm completely on board with the controls and treatments but please stop the tabloid panicked wording for this and even less important health issues.

Eating bats while driving could cause issues. Not sure it would increase fatalities significantly though.

I heard eating bush meat was a factor in the ebola tragedy

chewing on the bush has passed on a few infections in the past no doubt.

I don't know how genuine it is but there's a video of a chinese lady speaking and English subtitles saying the media are massively playing it down to not scare the world.

I think you'll find that the North Korean border is 'closed' almost always, ever.

It’s pretty insignificant considering MRSA is still a major issue in hospitals, especially when a significant number (40% odd ) get the infection via the ‘central line’ (ergo: introduces into the blood via a line/drip/whatever).

Without sounding like an old fart, but I remember when hospitals smelt like chlorine and acid (super strong bleach) as well as iodine. These days all I tend to smell stale urine....



That said, the UK airports and their jobsworths knowing full well a potentially serious virus could be spread just by allowing passengers to disembark with zero questions and a pathetic English only leaflet. :cuckoo: Why not take a smidgen of time to ask and verbally inform individually in each person’s native language of if they feel ok, what to do if they don’t, and to record their intended address whilst in the UK. Or was that just too much common sense?

Mind, I caught Norovirus on a Britannia overnight ferry (Cap Finistre) and zero f**ks were given by Britanny and PHE. So why should I be surprised ?

It's a deadly infectious disease with the potential to kill millions if it gets out of control before we have a vaccine, there needs to be drastic action before that happens to prevent the spread.

So is the Flu and most people don't vaccinate against that.
The media is hyping it somewhat. In the beginning, when little was known about it, then of course its right to be cautious, but any reporting now that more is know is merely media hype.
It is highly infectious and there is a high chance of catching it if you come into contact with a carrier. Like many viruses, it is at its most infectious before the carrier shows signs of illness.
The death rate is around 3%, which is relative low. In comparison, Flu has a mortality rate of around 1% and the SARS virus (also a Corona virus) was around 14% mortality. Those most at risk are the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions.
The biggest danger with this sort of virus is from further mutations which could make it more deadly. Yes, we need to be aware of it, but there is no need to panic about a virus that is only marginally worse than Flu.

Who said anything about panicking? I was just pointing out that the virus is dangerous particularly as you say if it mutates and becomes more deadly, and that the response so far is appropriate in my opinion.

Another Flu pandemic is seen by WHO as inevitable at some point, we have to do everything we can to prevent it. Hype in this case equals awareness and that's an essential part of dealing with the threat.

Maybe it's natures way of dealing with the human plague?

Two people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, the chief medical officer for England has announced.

They are both members of the same family and are receiving specialist NHS care.

No more details are being released about their identity or where they are being treated.

At least 213 people in the China have died from the virus, mostly in Hubei, with almost 10,000 cases nationally.

Wow, never been called a remoaner before, I have dual British/German citizenship so I couldn't care less.
One big advantage though is the Pound plummeting is brilliant news. :D

Be concerned , if it comes to the uk expect Wuhan style measures, china does not do these things lightly and has a long history of suppressing info on these diseases look at sars which was covered up until they no longer could , in short take all info out of China with a bucket of salt, Western estimates are way way higher than China figures

Same here I'm a dual as well because the situation. I will defiantely not come back to UK to live. But that is not the discussion here.
