ESL is defiantly user friendly.
"Hard" is subjective,it's defiantly satisfying to know you can tune your own motor.
If you're thinking of the DIY route then read the ESL user manual(several times),do plenty of logging, make small changes and take your time.
Cost was around 500 for everything but I think prices have gone up since(3 years ago).
BIG plus is when I've added parts like 3 port bcs, induction kit etc I don't have to pay silly money for map tweaks

Immobiliser is gone when esl is fitted, afaik! I've only had esl on my jdm cars.
I'm running mafless.
You will also need a wideband afr gauge/sensor and some detcans.

There are a few members using esl and diy mapping,I'm sure Ben Harris and piehole are running a uk cars, give them a shout or
Ring esl/drop them an email to make sure it will bypass the immobiliser,I'm pretty sure it does.
It's not difficult to switch to mafless, closed loop fueling take a little more work.
Yes detcans are used to detect knock.

I've emailed esl this evening. To switch to maffless I no there is wiring involved. I don't have to mess with the fuel tables do I.

Yes some wiring and a resistor to fit IF you want to run an IAT sensor.
Of corse you will need to adjust fuel tables, along with adjusting the rest of the map.
Have you had a read of the manual?
My mapping journey is a long(ish) story, but in short,my 1st ran maf....(car got nicked) 2nd/present car running mafless, remapped by a 'pro' but ran a very poor/unsafe map so decided to diy map after I rebuilt the engine

I can see why you mapped the car your self. A crap mapper isn't going to help things.i haven't read the manual I thought it was only available when the software was bought. I didn't no a resistor had to be fitted either. I was kinda hoping of some sort of help and guidance with esl from yourself and pie hole and other members

http://www.enduringsolutions.com/cat...cal-documents/

Have a read and see what you think
There are quiet a few members on here who have always been helpful including some proper pro mappers,I just play but play safe, every time I have a tweak I push it a bit more.
Very happy with how it runs so not touched it for months, until this week when I fitted the 3 port bcs so the fun started again

Lol I cheated when I bought mine, just sent my ecu to Andy at esl and he fitted the board for iirc £10.
if you're handy with a soldering iron it shouldn't be too much bother.

so just touch to pins together. If the ecu was live wouldn't it do damage

Yes the turbo is 420+ rated.
I will get it on the dyno at some point but numbers don't bother me tbh, just love the way it drives.

i know that if you put an JDM V3/4 ECU into a 97/98 UK Car, you have to change the pins for crank- and camshaft sensor and fuel pump, cause of the immobilizer in the european cars...
does i have to do this too if an ESL board is installed in the JDM ECU that i want to install in an UK car? so for example: 6S STi V3 ECU with ESL daughterboard installed into an 98 UK car (8S ECU) .... does it start with the right map or does i have to resolder known the pins?
