Burglar was career criminal, short lived

Not a relative visiting late at night

Give that pensioner a round of applause

for years now it's you can't smack kids, they just get told off for minor crimes.this teaches the child that crime pays and they move on to robbing old people etc, knowing all the long there aint enough places in nick to lock em up because the jails are full of kid fiddlers, next thing you know the kid is 30 and a proper criminal, if that old boy gets time there is something very very wrong with the justice system in the country,
Totally agree on the last point, in bold, as long as there isn't more to this and as long as it's just a straightforward defense of home scenario.

Regarding the rest, that's not quite how it works. It's pretty funny to read and I assume you're on the wind up. Not smacking kids turns them into criminals, of course!

I agree in being able to defend your castle, as it were. Just a few weeks ago we had what we assume was a crazed, homeless meth/crack-head (he looked like it) try to kick our front door in at 3.30am. Wife had decided to go to the sitting room to watch some telly and get back to sleep as I was snoring up a storm. Suddenly there is massive crashing and banging on the front door and some guy is trying to get in.
Wife calls cops, shouts at the guy that we have a GSD and a Pitbull and that she is calling the cops. Guy carries on booting the front door.
Wife wakes me up and I come to front door, standing there with a massive kitchen knife and the pitbull, really hoping that the guy doesn't get through the door before the cops get to us.
Cops arrived within 5 mins and as soon as the sirens had started coming the guy had rolled into a ball and was rocking back and forth on our porch. Cops arrest guy. Guy was saying that his friends GF lives in our house - she certainly does not.

Anyway, point is that the guy was crazy to do what he did, especially in Texas!! We warned the guy of what he was breaking into and I would have been fully justified in ending the guy if he came through the door and I felt threatened, the law would have backed me up, also (as long as I made sure I killed him, otherwise I would risk being sued, seriously).
Fact is that he is lucky that I am not allowed to own a firearm yet, as well, as maybe I would have felt more happy to open the door and confront the chap, which would probably have not ended well for anyone.

In Texas, as you all probably know, it's a little easier to justify deadly defense of your home (by whatever means). I would still probably be arrested though, to make sure I wasn't just killing people who came to my door.

When I was last in Texas you could be arrested for not killing an intruder, but perhaps I've got that wrong!

Sounds about right. A lot of friends were saying I should have "shot the guy in the face" or I should have "shot through the door" (sooooo illegal).

Another was saying I need to pop down to Walmart and get a shotgun from there as they are going for $200.

People around my neighborhood get upset if they see someone driving around slowly in a car that is older than 2 years - and if they are also black? OMG they lose their minds.

A bit of an example of when protecting your family and neighborhood can go overboard and turn you into nutters - Americans are so afraid of everything! (that being said, my wife still doesn't want a gun in the house)

Now he has to wait for the burglar's mates to come see him...because no-one in the UK EVER lets anything go.

I had a word

An observations though

I used to drink in a crazy pub in Sussex. Some old boy was a regular, in his mid seventies, a farmer who claimed poverty but happened to own about 600 acres of Sussex/Surrey. Probably the toughest guy in a busy pub. And he drank a LOT. One night a barman started to take the p,iss out of him so farmer said nothing except lean over the bar and take the guy out with a single punch. Now that's someone you wouldn't want to bump into.

There is now the very overlooked flip side. Great result, justice is (actually) served but that poor old guy now has to deal with killing that guy. Probably something he didn’t see on his horizon at his age. I hope he is getting support, a pat on the back and a pint is all good and well but he may need more. Just a thought. Don’t wish to sound glib but it’s possibly a factor before the poor guy drops dead of (needless) guilt.

How much guilt would the burglars show if they had stabbed & robbed him?

Have another drink.Well done.

The issue now is the poor guy is living in fear of reprisals from the dead mans family and associates.

Short of fortifying your property, what can you do?

After two break-ins and persistent "scouting attempts" (four in one week over the Christmas period all by different people), and a reprisal attempt after one pair was caught. I really am sympathetic to how this guy feels.

They are just cowardly wa&Nk£rs.they won't go anywhere near him now he's on the radar. They just pick on the weak & defenceless who they can scare & then run away.Usually thick as sh*t as well so not creative enough to come up with anything that would leave them in the clear. Also they have no backbone to backup their threats & probably don't care about the scum who was killed as they are selfish, small minded nobodies. They wouldn't say boo to a goose if they were on their own.You have to appreciate what low level snakes & excuses for human beings you are dealing with.I wouldn't loose any sleep.

They may not come near him.

Cowards can throw bricks through windows, key cars, smash windscreens, leave anonymous threats, even just eggs, silent calls, late night door bell ringing/door knocking.

Whilst nothing may happen, the thought of it just grinds you down.

You give these idiots far to much credit. They wont go near him now.He is no longer an unknown target.
Don't believe the media cr*p about these morons. They are cowards.
The fact you can even think the way you do shows how the media have influenced you. These scumbags are the weakest,stupidest,low-level people you could ever come across.I was bought up on a very large south London council estate.I know these people. They wont do anything if there is even the smallest chance of them getting caught.Grow up & treat them with the contempt they deserve.

Well many probably still think back to Tony Martin doing 3 years for killing a burglar. I know the facts around that case are very different however he was still an old guy who killed a burglar on his property and the general public concensus at the time was it was wrong he was jailed.

The burglar was running away from him, not attacking him,I dont disagree that given the chance the ****** may have harmed him,
But when the trigger was pulled he was running away, and at some distance, not in the heat of a scuffle say.

Now the dead ******'s "friends & family" are leaving "tributes" to him outside the old boy's house. I would not be honouring someone who died in the commission of a crime against an OAP.

I see the Pikey clan the scumbag belonged to have been putting up flowers and balloons near to where the little Angel died.

Thankfully, most have now been removed by locals.
