Also quite interesting that he starts that video talking about child labour mining cobolt but very quickly tries to deflect the problem by highlighting poor diesel quality in the same country! So what, they should employ more children to mine more cobolt so they can drive EVs instead? I don't support children mining cobolt, I don't support dredging the seabed to mine cobolt either! Small batteries in smart-phones or laptops are one thing, the huge batteries needed for cars are a whole other level of destroying the planet. Sure, burining oil is bad, but producing huge batteries is not better, its just a different way for humans to destroy the planet by unsustainably consuming natural resources. The idea of clean vehicles is great, but the reality of EV battery production is not that great which is why I support HEV over BEV. We should just jump on the first alternative to ICEs, but on the best alternative and that is not BEVs!

It's not as if Cobolt is the only bad thing that goes into battery manufacturing

 

Neither is the, extraction, transportation and refining of crude oil. Look again at some of the images in the Guardian link, truly shocking, those aren't the worst scenes if you go and look. Yet the vast majority just carry on, blinkered, no ignorant to how their car gets its fuel.

The nay sayers, of which the major fuel producers are probably at the forefront of negative reporting have tried to create a misleading image of BEV in order to protect and secure continued supply with incalculable damage at this crucial period of significant global weather change.

Why would a company/s that produces a grade of fuel so poor its worse than those in Nigeria who make it on still burning wood for heat. There can be no other reason than to make profit at the expense of the environment.

Yet ICE drivers blindly continue support by buying fuel.

I'm not a nay sayer, I completely agree that we need to move away from ICE vehicles and totally agree the oil industry is extremely bad. I just won't blindly accept the first alternative that comes along that in reality doesn't improve anything for the environment. EVs have their place, but in my opinion only as small city cars which are small and light-weight requiring less batteries and shorter range.

They are not giving up on Hydrogen, just stepping up BEV production. BEV will dominate for a few years until the Hydrogen supply chain is built up and Hydrogen becomes more attractive to the mass market! BEVs are just a stop-gap to satisfy the people who want to save the environment but are too dumb to realise the batteries they are using are just as damaging to the environment as the ICE vehicles they are replacing!

I do think it’s a waste that nobody really pursues petrol (gasoline) fuel cells with any gusto now. Even if it’s considered ‘interim’.

Ideal method of creating a electric driven vehicle with extended range and refuelling ability on par with a ICE car with added advantage of less need for battery capacity, therefore more space and less weight and also true ability to ‘self charge’ (unlike Lexus/Toyota’s stupid branding of a non-plugin hybrids). And it harmonises with existing infrastructure so it’s a win on all accounts...on the basis electric charging can still come from fossil fuels, the advantage here is grid demand is lessened (no need for ‘super chargers’ ), it still can be powered by renewables for city /medium range use with added reassurance it can do long journeys without planning the route and rest-stops around charging points! In extreme situations you’d have to stop to allow the cell to catch up, which can be anywhere so long as there is fuel in the tank.

And if fossil fuel really is a nono...they can already run on methanol : I’ve seen them in camping/caravans ( EFOY ) albeit on small scale generation. Meths is far easier to implement into existing infrastructure.

Hydrogen would be lovely but generation/storage and infrastructure is just taking too long...they’ve been plugging away at this for nearly forty years now and still stuck in the same stumbling blocks. Maybe a Musk type person could push it on, but they are a rare breed of person.

 

This is the Beta-max V VHS moment. BEV have won the popularity stakes, they will go onto dominate for 10-20 years until someone can miniaturise, and produce mass volume of liquid hydrogen substantially cheaper than it cost in energy to produce it.
