Sorry, should have stated that my last posting was well and truly tongue in cheek.

Where do I sit? On the bike, filtering between lots of stationary cars!

If I thought filtering was dangerous, I wouldn't be doing it on a daily basis.

Thought you were pro-bike, good. You nearly got a barrage tho!

Just come back from a quick (but safe) bit of filtering myself

Cool

Dave.

I typed it out by hand 'with passion'.

Nick F.

I 'clicked' what you meant straight away, VERY funny.

Ok, joined this one a bit late but feel qualified to answer. Fed up of sitting in traffic every morning in my Scoob I got shot of it and bought a bike, did my test, etc. (there were other reasons too, by the way).

Some very good thoughts in this thread, and valid opinions.

I for one take the choice to filter down very long in-town traffic queues but only if the cars either side of me are doing no more than walking pace. Even then, I stick to 5 mph or less, with my rear brake covered, and very alert to what everyone is doing in their cars.

I don't consider it queue jumping as I'm taking up so little road space I can't see why any driver would have an issue with it - "respectfully, just let me through, I'll be out of your way in no time, honest".

Before I was 'converted' I was always wary of riders coming up inbetween lanes. I'd move over for them, I wouldn't hop between lanes annoyingly. As they breezed past I'd just think to myself "fair does, they took the option of a bike and this is where it's paying off for them. I'm in here, sitting in traffic, listening to a radio, nice and warm and I'll be home 15 minutes after them. So be it."

I agree it's the riders responsibility (I too was taught what was said in the early postings - no 'official' line on the matter) but I also agree it doesn't help when infuriated car drivers purposely block, lane-swap or open doors in front of you.

I for one am very glad I moved from Scooby to ****ebox + Bike, not just for this reason alone I hope you understand. Riding a bike certainly makes you appreciate good driving (I would argue it actually makes you a better car driver) but also makes you consider the possible implications of your actions on the road more.

At the end of the day, we makes our choices... just don't get wound up when the choice you made isn't as good as someone elses.

;-)

Just my opinions!
Cheers,
Dan

Didn't DA used to stand for something else? Particularly the 'A'

The book I have was published in Sept 98 and is the current version in use. Which version do you refer to?

Robin Reliant parts, of course what do you need?

It is not necessary for the bright sparks to be that bright when lights like yours glow so dim.

Oh dear.

DA.

You wrote> Roadcraft is written for and behalf of Police Instructors and is therefore explicitly designed for the use of Police Riders (and drivers for that matter).

Codswallop.

Motorcycle Roadcraft "has been developed under the guidance of a group of Police motorcycle trainers, with input from Police riders, trainees, civillian experts, and is for police trainees and other riders concerned with getting the best from their machines."

"This edition has been completely re-written to reflect changes in advice and in regulations."

You then wrote> Example Roadcraft also covers the rules/guidelines to be followed for proceeding through a RED ATS....

No it doesn't, you must be reading a different book, there is not even a single mention throughout the whole book about Sirens or Blue lights at all!

You made the point and continue to do so that motorcycles can't legally filter; they can, You haven't got a single clue what you are talking about.

'Facts,' you need to do your homework a little more thoroughly then youth, nothing you have said so far has been factual.

I see nothing particularly irresponsible (on the whole) from any of the motorcyclists on this thread, they have all pointed out that there are dangers andthey need to be considered.

*Tut* Some people just can't be told can they. Any more facts required DA? Please just shoot wildly from the hip (as usual).

If your book doesn't make any reference to Police Procedure at ATS signals then it is obviously an expurgated version of the real thing!

I suggest that you dispense with the belief that your noddy book of motorcyclying is the be all and end all of Road matters and do some proper research.

Judging by your performance so far, I'll wager that you also sell Robin Reliant parts from your business, under the misguided belief that they are specialist Subaru parts!

I'll leave it now for one of you bright sparks to have the final word, (after all that is what it is all about now isn't it! )

Roadcraft is written for and behalf of Police Instructors and is therefore explicitly designed for the use of Police Riders (and drivers for that matter). For Example Roadcraft also covers the rules/guidelines to be followed for proceeding through a RED ATS (Automatic Traffic Signal), surely you are not suggesting that carrying through red traffic lights is legal too !!!???!!!??!?!?!?

You have failed to notice a critical point which you yourself took pleasure typing out...

"Use the opportunity to make progress but be courteous and avoid conflict with other road users.", This was the whole point behind my intervention within this thread...a point that you have sadly missed....

I myself have no problems with Bikers who behave in a responsible, courteous and defensive manner and that includes filtering, if you could be bothered to read back you will see that I was purely pointing out facts.

There are literally hundreds of statutes, which although current and enforceable are not exercised on a regular basis. This is not to say that they are defunct, but rather that discretionary powers limit their application unless under extraordinary circumstances.

Unfortunately, the irresponsible, arrogant and sanctimonious attitudes of some motor cyclists, has come to the fore within this thread, something that it would appear is alarmingly more evident on the roads too!

Haven't logged in for a short while all I can say about the comments above is:
Well said Mike
NickF and PTholt
If you set your headlight so when you are the correct distance behind the beam is just below the mirror, every time you go over a bump or accelerate the light bobbles in their mirror, I image that is really annoying not that I have ever done that or recommend it you understand.

Dear All,
Just out of curiousity (and because he was annoying me so much!), I decided to click on the profile of DA and his occupation is quoted as being "high court judge"! Obviously, as we all know, these type of people are so far removed from the general public's views and opinions, all credence of his arguements have now gone out the window (IMHO!)
LOL
Mike R
PS DA, be careful of strangulation, we all know how you judges etc have strange sexual habits....
