i have just purchased a set of GT1 wheels and was looking at the 17! ones already on my car and wondered how much room there was to play with...

Rule of thumb.
Increase wheel diameter, decrease tyre wall height in proportion.
BUT the PCD (the distance between the holes in the wheel hub (or the bore size)) may be different on the GT1's if they came off an Hatch STi, so will not fit.
look up a rolling radius calculator, when you increase the alloy size, you ideally choose a tyre profile that means the overall rolling radius is not affected too much.
