Facebook is broken!
See, Lauri Love is so smart that he can crash the whole thing. His Aspie brain power is just out of this world!:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/28/lauri-love/
I think Nav Sarao is also capable of crashing the whole thing down:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...-two-jobs.html
His friends even called him a legend. I can bet he's another Aspie.
I'm not glorifying their crimes, I'm just saying that these guys are bright as buttons, and therefore, the likes of them may be able to crash the whole world's internet one day.
I may be wrong. I don't understand technology that well, so perhaps I underestimate the solidity of the internet. I do understand that the company's own security systems fragility is a separate issue to the fragility or solidity of the internet.

they haven't "crashed the whole thing" they've just targeted one "company" in your example.
But if you say that internet is indestructible, then fine. I'd like to live with that, as I don't want internet to crash and disappear. I find it very useful. I'm sure you do. If it weren't for the internet, we wouldn't be chatting shyte here all day long, and procrastinating from what really needs to be done. Procrastination is my story for today, anyway. It has been alright, though. I still got some important work done, so no regrets.
Wait till our resident conspiracy theorist Gary007 walks in, and gives his conspiracy theory with his prediction on the mortality of internet; along with his "Be afraid! Be very, very afraid, you malleable internet loving idiots!" stance.

Also the first thing you need to know about the Internet is that there is no such thing as "the Internet."
Most people get this wrong, people tend to think it's this one thing and it's not, it's thousands of independently owned and operated networks, networks that are tied together by physical connections that use a common protocol.

Phew! Thank God for that! I don't want my internet gone, ever!

he has the keys to the castle after all
does that mean all the CT'rs can now retire - all their theories will be blown wide open
no off course not - you just go deeper
that's the great thing about conspiracy theories, you go deeper - and you NEVER get to the bottom
Trump won't reveal Roswell, The Illuminati/NWO, UFO, Fake Moon Landings, Planet X etc etc

The only way to bring down the Internet is to get rid of all the people. i.e. an E.L.E even then there would be survivors and the net would continue.
Well it was broken for Ali B as well. For me, it was down from, say 7pm to 12:30 am last night. It was coming up with broken server message. Al said that ironically, the Skinny Jeans broke it temporarily, not the big jeans Mr. Trump.
yes when you have a proven conspiracy theorist as THE most powerful man in the world, the head of the CIA / NSA / FBI

We need Gary here. Come on, Gary! Your input is direly needed in this thread, man!
Rubbish, that would just be an inconvenience just like a DOS attack or a large hack, it would not crash the net. It would be like a mosquito bite on an elephant.

maybe then put a couple of default routes to 127.0.0.0
Wasn't the Millenium bug due to crash every computer on 31st December 2000 when the clock struck 12:00 midnight? That could have only happened via the internet relay. It's not that the bug would have multiplied and entered people's homes/office to crash computer screens on individual basis.
Anyway, that never happened, so it was just one big bull scare, wasn't it.
I remember talking to some IT guys in 2000 about it; before 31st Dec. They were just over-complicating it with their IT terms/jargon. No one was saying that it was a bull, which it turned out to be.

Really .. you create a virus with at a new level of sophistication it's unlikely, but not impossible.
Think of it like a zombie outbreak .. it would be slow at first, spreading quickly as it hit the main networks, backups would be made with infections, eventually if we were unable to work out how to stop it, it would destroy everything connected.
I'm still struggling because say someone goes around bombing every damn server on this earth and above, internet as a whole can go off, because although it's not 'the internet', all the different internets are inter-connected by the servers, aren't they?
I'm sorry if I'm coming across as an ignorant, which I am; when it comes to IT.

No it wasn't bull, it's just that virtually all PC's were already "patched" for the bug. It was more the media hype that made it out to be something that could be disastrous.

a few systems in banks etc
but I had a printer with a 2 digit time/date display - it was marked as non Y2K compliant
as if it would not print on Jan 1st - lol
just a way for consultants to make a fast buck
Warrenm2 - thought the billions the UK and the US spent on it was worth it
says it all really
Italy spent about £30.00
yes it was a total con

Have a read of this if you can be bothered, most of it is accurate.

If they weren't patched, they would experience issues, they wouldn't stop working. The patch for most people went undetected as it was corrected in an update in the operating system they used on their PC and in other software.

I'm guessing some of the people posting in this thread don't really follow the tech press that closely. It's only just a few years ago that a bunch of saddoes with nothing better to do came very close to making the Internet all but unusable for large parts of the globe, if not completely breaking it.
You can't take anything for granted.

There would still be the low-Earth communication satellites that allocate a portion of bandwidth to regular IP traffic. These comsats could establish connections between wireless devices or any other terminal that still has access to fiber cables. As an example, this is how the military re-established connections after the 2006 tsunami disaster in Thailand, they set up a satellite connection from one point, sent their signals up into space, and then down to a receiving terminal. Instant network. The "super" virus would have to have infected the sats for your theory to work, extremely unlikely to happen.
I do get the gist, though. What you are saying is that the Millenium bug was not a hoax, most pcs were patched for protection, media hype made it sound like a much bigger world seizing threat than it really was, and of course, unpatched pcs were effected. Understood.
Now, say if we have no warning, and a far worse post-Trump bug gets created by some Aspie whizkid that targets main servers, can't that take the whole thing down, because nothing will be patched beforehand? How can we rule out that it will NEVER happen? I mean, such a bug that it absolutely corrupts the servers, settelites ad well as your pcs- obviously.
