In standard guise, a WRX has a claimed 0-60 of 5.7 seconds. However, with its AWD, it is better suited to this benchmark sprint than, say, 30-70 mph. Nonetheless, a standard WRX is still faster than the average road car, but as has already been said, is not as fast as the recent wave of hot hatches, nor a lot of modern German saloons for that matter. But then again, a Blob WRX is up to 13 years old now.
A decat and remap will unleash an additional 50-70 bhp, which obviously makes the WRX a different proposition. My Audi TTRS has 340 bhp, a claimed 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, and a superior power-to-weight ratio than a pre-facelift A45 AMG. Now, obviously it's hard to compare due to differences in power delivery and the sensation of speed, but I can assure you there is very, very little difference in performance between my TTRS and my old WRX, which was running circa 300 bhp. Using any benchmark - 0-60, 30-70, 1/4 mile - I really wouldn't want to bet on which car would win in a race. The funny thing is, nobody would even try to claim a TTRS isn't a fast car, but because this is Scoobynet and some people think it's clever to mock the WRX, there will always be some who will try to argue that even a tuned WRX isn't fast.
In summary, a standard WRX isn't especially fast, but is by no means slow. A WRX with a decat and remap (280bhp+) is a quick car. A WRX tuned to the safe limit of its engine/gearbox (350 bhp) will have a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 250 bhp/tonne and would be faster than probably 97-98% of the cars on UK roads.
Anyone who says no WRX is fast is an idiot... but there's plenty of those on here!

I have a 1.6 with a twin supercharger setup.Lapped the ring in 5.61 in the wet.To be sure.so it did.

Looking at buying one but was shocked when i found out it was only 225hp, is this right? ive owned a gto twin turbo, and also a 280bhp evo 4 and just wondering if someone can tell me how the wrx holds up? also looking at reflashing does anyone use accessport?

Just to elaborate a little bit more on my comment... i test drove both models at Subaru when i was looking into buying one,based on the simple fact that i wanted the fastest car and sportier driving experience after i drove them both i went with the STI as it suited my expectations "At the time"of what a fast Impreza was all about.SJ.

Hilarious the wrx is the budget entry level turbo impreza.
The sti is the evos equivalent.
It has the proper brakes gearbox and dccd in most forms.
If you buy a wrx you spend the rest of your time on forums trying to justify why you bought the cheaper poorly equipped version like above,grasping on to facts that are peddled by other wrx owners to justify their sti envy.
You waffle on about the car can be tuned to 350 bhp which is true but then the gearbox is on its limit and so is the bottom end.
Also to get there requires a new turbo,injectors,i.c. etc and all the sti requires is a remap.

Back to the OP; even a stock STi is not fast compared to modern 300+bhp hatches. And I suspect that Petter Solberg in a WRX will be faster than you in an STi/Evo5, across any given A-B journey.
A stock WRX is not fast by any standards, it only has a paltry 225bhp and is hardly a lightweight. Although the chassis and 4WD system lets you carry a lot of momentum, so it can still show a clean pair of heals to more powerful cars on the right roads. A simple Prodive kit (which many have) takes them to STi stock power. 280+bhp is not difficult or expensive and transforms the car. But you'd need to start considering brakes at this point. 330+ is achievable with OEM Sti parts but that's probably as far as you want to go. It's not really cost effective beyond that; you'd be a lot better buying an STi in the first place.
An STi is a better car, no doubt. And if your budget allows and you are happy with a saloon, you'd be daft not to. But if you are on a lesser budget (similar mileage/condition STi is at least twice the price of a WRX) or you want a Wagon (with the exception of the JDM Bug) then a WRX is still a sound choice for a quick car, once you thrown some STi parts at it.

For a everyday car a WRX is the one i would go for,but for modding potential as a weekend Toy play thing it has to be the STI.As TP said above alot of it is budget and use try to get a model that you can 1' insure,2' afford the upkeep of and 3' fits in with your modding plans in the future,whether that be you are planning to mod or just leave it standard and keep it clean,but by the sound of your first post on this thread you are looking a model with abit of get up and go.If you can try to get a Impreza that's been modded up"Properly"already whether that be a WRX or STI,it will be shed loads cheaper in the long run just my 2 cents.SJ.

People who own/have only owned a WRX will tell you how much better the WRX is on fuel, how good the 5 speed ratios are for "everyday" driving and how they could of bought a Ferrari, Aston Martin, Sunseeker yacht or a Boeing 747 but opted for a 3grand WRX because it suited their needs better.
Where as people who have owned both will you, the STi is a far far superior car...!

The classic wrx was a great car, they missed a trick with the newage by making it heavier and not increasing the power. The 5 speed box has better gear changes and feels a lot more natural going through the gate, the ratios is subjective as my hawk 6 speed is great for everyday driving
