it will of been like that before you bought it. its doesnt happen over night. has the oil been changed recently?

serviced in the last 300 miles? stands a good chance they never prefilled the oil filter or pulled the crank sensor to spin the engine over on first start up.

My forged 2.5 STi sounds like that when cold, is your engine forged perhaps? If so, you could actually be on to a result.
However, even when cold my piston slap fades a bit on idle at about 2.5k rpm.


From your video, can't see the oil pressure light (hidden by the steering wheel), does it go out straight away once the engine fires up?


Maybe try and do a video when it's hot after a normal run.

assuming its a standard lump then piston slap on a 48k car, chances are its already got had a higher mileage engine fitted.

whatever way you look at it, its gonna need a rebuild soon anyway, the bores are either oval or the pistons gonna be scrap, piston slap isn't an acceptable thing unless you're running a forged engine.

I'm just gutted that I've only had the car two days and I'm going to have to have the stress of getting the car transported back to the trader and all the other hassle that comes with it! I've emailed the trader on Saturday and he hasn't replied yet.. Yes I don't expect him to being back holiday I just hope that he is sympathetic to what's happening and doesn't make it difficult !!

Ask the dealer what they want you to do, unlikely they will pay for the car to be ferried back unfortunately, but it needs to go back to make sure it's safe and to give you peace of mind.

Keep an open dialog with them, they may have multiple branches and be willing to get an assessment locally to you at their expense.

I ended up taking a trader to the small claims for a headlamp issue on my car, anything within 6 months is reasonable and the Judge was shocked the trader even bothered trying to fight it. All expenses awarded to me.

edit: if you get any kind of push back, send them a letter recorded delivery, detailing the fault and asking them to resolve it. Keep a copy and the proof of postage.

Try not to worry and just take the hit of sending it back on a trailer.150 quid?
You'll feel a lot better with your money back.
I also think maybe it's a 2nd engine.
I've had 3 imprezas and never had an engine sound like that.
I would just send the car back on a trailer then go down there and get your money back. Don't settle for less.
There's loads of cars out there.

I think you should go for that dude, even if it is just piston slap, it will probably play on your mind (don't blame you if it did).
Try for a full refund and walk away, it will probably just be sold to someone else same as, but in this world it's each to their own, so in the nicest possible way, that's not your problem.
You bought it with full good intentions, not your fault if something maybe isn't right.

Also, I have no idea what the trader is like, but if you get the "Yeah, you thrashed it all the way home mate" card thrown at you, he has no proof - I doubt very much you did that anyway....new toy and all that.

Can you not take it to a local garage or to somebody that knows what they are looking at?
If they say it's piston slap or knocking then you have something to go back to the dealer with instead of shelling out to have it recovered all the way back to them to be fobbed off

Don't really want to take it to a garage, why should I if you get where I'm coming from?. Reading up about the new consumer law it states I shouldn't have to pay to have the car transported and that it's the responsibility of the trader to recover the car

Completely understand what you are saying but having a second professional opinion from somebody can't hurt,but if you can get the trader to recover and properly repair and as mentioned not put a cheap used bottem end in then happy days
