I Thought it was a noisy forged build but now I'm not sure?

Cheers Ditchy
Good plan
I did replace with decent oil this time but,I've ordered some more good stuff, have 2 filters at the ready so will buy some cheap mineral oil run for a short time then in with the good stuff. And cross my fingers and toes!
Going to buy a compression tester too so hope all is well!

If you really want it to fail, putting mineral oil in it now will give you that result, that ****s for Morris Oxfords etc, if you must, put some cheap semi synthetic in there, at least your bearings will be better protected than mineral oil.

Appreciate the advice,I was just going to put the cheap stuff in and run on tickover for a few minutes then put the decent fully synthetic ester oil in.
At the moment I have put millers CFS in,bit expensive to use for flushing out I know but all I had at the time,am going to run with this in for a week then do another oil change with gulf competition oil.
I will scrap the mineral oil idea and buy some cheap semi synthetic as flushing oil before I put the good stuff in again

So after a 2nd oil change there wasn't a hint of any metal when I drained it today, filled back up with some quality oil and new filter, and fitted a magnetic sump plug.
Engine is still a little tappy when warmed up tho.
Didn't have chance to check the timing belt idler so still a possibility the noise is from that?
I will be getting a new kit fitted on my next days off.

My compression tester kit didn't turn up either so will check compression when we do the timing belt.

Cheers for all the advice and help

your worrying about the state of your engine and your still spunking money into "quality" engine oils.. Just run it on some 10w40 semi for a few thou and see how it goes. otherwise its money wasted IMO. ive been running 10w40 semi cheapo oils in my 93 since ive owned it and its what ive used at the last three track days.

I've always used quality oils tbh,I also do regular oil changes, max 4k before the next change and I'm not going to change my ways now, thanks for the concern tho
£35 for some nice fully synthetic ester oil isn't expensive IMO and I know if I took it to a garage for a service I would be paying way more than that for some sh1te stuff.

Have you done a compression test yet mate ? as that's where I would go after seeing the bits in the oil as I think someone said in an earlier post poss looks piston related, IMO better to rebuild before fail than because of fail.

No as I say my compression test kit hasn't turned up yet so I will have to do that next time I'm off work.
I'm happy there wasn't any sign of metal in this oil change but I guess this still doesn't rule out any internal damage.
I can't fund a rebuild right now so will just have to see how it and hope for the best.

Have a look in my build thread. My piston failure wouldn't have shown up on a compression test at all..

Cheers I will take a look at that,I've also ordered a borescope so maybe this would show any piston damage?
How else would you know if a piston was cracked apart from stripping the engine?

A borescope wouldnt have helped me either

Cracked around the piston skirt, and gudgeon pin, so wasnt until it was stripped the damage was found

Thanks, hoping not to do a rebuild to be honest.
Just thinking about things and when I got the car it was dettting pretty bad,not sure how long the previous owner had been driving it like this?
Maybe the detonation has been slowly chipping away at the Pistons and that's why I had some metal particles in the oil?
I've now sorted out the timing so with any luck the engine will last a bit longer.
No det and clear oil now so fingers crossed

Well it looks like I got stung when buying this car lol
We changed the timing belt today, and whilst a couple of the idlers were noisy I still have a slight knock. My mate says it sounds like the small ends on the LH bank,so still means a rebuild even if the big ends aren't gone(yet).
The reason I feel like I've been ripped off by the previous owner is.....

The paperwork I got with the car has a GG forged short block+all the bits to build the engine(This is what the previous owner sold me it as having in).
With the car being a v3 this means it could have the older or newer style timing belt tensioner, the paperwork has the newer style and guess what,,,the car is fitted with the older type tensioner!
So this engine I have is not the GG shortblock and I very much doubt it is a forged engine.
All I was thinking when I bought it was,the lad on here I bought it from was a good honest lad,the car had all the paperwork to show what work had been done, the head gaskets are steel(you can see this)but guess this means fukc all I suppose.

Coincidence?? That the lad I bought it from still did log on and was active on threads, until a few days after me posting this thread?(just hanging about to see how long it took to go bang?)
Maybe me just being paranoid and he didn't know himself that the car was not what he advertised and swore it was?
And defiantly me being a d1ck for trusting anyone!
Ah well lesson leant. **** happens. Etc etc
I will see how long the car lasts, when it packs in(and it will) it will go in the garage until I can pay for a genuine FORGED build.
Cheers for the advice and help anyway,I feel pretty stupid and lost a little faith in the human race today but I'm sure I'll get over it

Bugger, sad times.

Not a nice feeling when you put your faith in people and they let you down, but hey ho, there are still some decent people left in this world. I'm also a great believer in Karma, they'll get theirs in the end.

Been following this (as looking at doing a forged build myself soon) - mate, that is seriously bad to read Have you contacted who you bought it off? Sorry if its obvious, haven't been on here long, but once you have a response (or not) I think you should name him. Sorry to read the outcome

I will get a vid up of the noise when I can, wouldn't be so bothered even if it was a knackered engine, just the fact I was sold it as a GG forged and it clearly isn't.

Thanks ditch, yes luckily good people out weigh the bad which is defiantly a

Won't be naming anyone tbh,my own stupid fault for believing in paperwork and honesty lol

mate i was in the exact same situation years back when i bought a type ra, had ££££s of receipts from GG for a full build, cosworth everything, few weeks after buying it the head gasket went, opened it up and it was a standard open deck engine
that experience put me off buying a ready modded car, receipts or not, and have just started with standard or near standard examples and done the work myself.

Same hear Sean ,GG with cosworth spec ect,but I guess impossible to tell without stripping the engine, stupidly I went on trust(won't do that again).
At least the Twin scroll and 6 speed are real so if I do decide to give up on the car then I could get some of my money back if I strip it and sell the parts.
One thing is for sure,I won't be selling the engine as a forged build.
Not even sure what heads are on it now either, thought they would/should be v3 STI but they might have been swopped as well? I will have to see if there's a way to identify them?

As it's my daily I'm going to just run it as it is for now, will get a vid up on here of the noise(I know this won't confirm the knock) but would be interested to see what you guys think.
Then in the near future,I will just buy a cheap runabout, take the Impreza off the road, whip the engine out and begin stripping it to see if I can find out what I have and what's causing the knock.
Might strip and sell as parts?
Might even keep the car as I do love it,maybe save up for a 2.1 stroker short block build?
Just a bit gutted right now so need to have a good think.

If going forged a 2.1 isn't much more expensive than a normal build anyway so go for it.

Mine sounded exactly like little ends when the piston died fwiw

Just read this start to finish, sounds like you been had or he knew of issues hence selling

As daft as it is, even an oil change done wrong can knock them out, so i wouldnt jump the gun and say the build isnt what it said, only splitting the block will confirm that.

If theres anything i can do through work to help gimme a nudge 👍

Gutted for you was hoping for a positive outcome after the oil came out clean, hopefully you have some good news when you do decide to strip it eventually

Thanks Dan,appriciate

I can safely say the car doesn't have the engine that it was sold as having, going by the paperwork which has the GG receipt with the Built shortblock and the new style tensioner.
