If your list includes a possible STi top mount upgrade, let me know!

bustamoves.

Seen people on other forums claiming up to 310.

TD04 will do 300 all day if you do all the supporting mods, bigger intercooler, panel filter, bigger inlet hose, decats, wrapped ported up-pipe, tgv deletes, manifold spacers, wrapped headers etc etc. Even things like low friction oils, lightweight flywheel, and lightweight/removed pulleys will increase bhp at the hubs.

Id be keen to know stock TD04 records.

JaMes W of Nasioc has run a 12.4 @109 in his 2002 Newage WRX with a stock TD04 and that would take big power. AFAIK he only took out the rear seats.

I'm sure one more mod would push this over 300bhp - "Just a decat and remap" according to the tuners

injector duty cycle will be largely dependent on how much boost your running and what your AFR target needs to be to allow decent timing on your chosen fuel type.

with a decent tank of super you'll be running them well into the 90's to get the most from the turbo - but still not as high as subaru run the blues from the factory (i've seen 120% duty on stock prodrive cars previously).

Don't get too bogged down in it, VF3x or a TD05 16g are a common mod to a WRX with a set of STI pinks - the mapper will know what to do to get the most out of it.

Even if you're right, can't see anyone forking out for that lot and keeping the TD04.

Thanks bludgod, I'm no expert with all the oily stuff, but as reliability is a major consideration I wanted to get a feel for normal tolerances so that I have a vague understanding of the mapper's objectives.
Last question (promise), I've seen a lot of talk about the patented turbo copies, like Kingawa? With reliability in mind, are these worth considering?

Chinese turbos seem to be a bit hit and miss, so it's all down to the luck of the draw.

You could buy a 2nd hand TD04 off here or ebay for £30/60 send it off to be billeted and ported, for around £300 they go as high as 330bhp depending on supporting mods, which will give you more of what you're after without loosing any spool, infact in theory you should gain some spool.

Depends what you want from your car, TD04 is a cracking little turbo, with the right supporting mods you can muller most things up to 100mph as the 12.4 qtr above suggests which is the sort of time you'd expect to be getting from a 450bhp car, so you'll be looking at 120mph + before the 450bhp car is going to be going past, who drives around at 120/130mph I sure as hell don't.

Most of my fast driving happens between 40mph and 90mph down twisty country lanes, you don't need huge amounts of power for that, you need a well set up car that carries speed well, like clios etc do.

there's no doubt a big brand name billet turbo is a better choice, but to be fair I had a china turbo on my bug before for about 2 years and last time I checked in with the new owner it's still going strong and at £120 quid it was very good bang for the buck. Ultimately if your worried about how long it will last you then you should spend a little more now on quality hardware - either get the existing unit overhauled or stick a low mileage STI turbo on.
