On the course they are only £95. Tbf the converter will only be reconfiguring the ssm lead to obd format, so I can't see it being rocket science

Just keep in mind that the cable is effectively the way that ESL licenses their software. They don't charge for the software, or try to lock it down with activation keys etc, they charge for the cable. Essentially, you can either buy an ESL board and pay a mapper to map it for you, or you buy an ESL board and cable which then entitles you to use their software and map it yourself.
Being a software developer myself, and having had a chat with Andy about how this side of things works, I'd be very surprised if an SSM to OBD cable will work at all with the ESL software.
I'm just trying to save people from wasting their money buying something that I'm pretty certain won't work and pointing out that the £95 for the cable is more than just a cable - it's the software, the use of the ESL software and the support that goes along with it too.

as above, i had made some enquiries with ESL to see if I could fashion or purchase some kind of multi headed cable to do all years but the word is it's not doable so I would expect the keys are different between the years as well as the physical plug layout.
at the end of the day compared to the likes of a tactrix for doing newage cars the ESL cable is quite cheap and you only need it if you want to tinker with the map. if you just want to have the ECU and someone else map the car they will have a cable and you won't need one.

It's a fair comment regarding the software, all I asked if their was a converter, someone had one so I'm going to try it, I'm not trying to "cut corners" merely save a few quid like everyone does. If it doesn't work, more the fool me, I'll just buy the genuine obd lead also.

Not getting a dig at anyone in particular, just saying its best to do the job right first time. My thinking behind buying everything new from ESL was that I'd have warranty and support from them if I ever needed it. They've been most helpful from the word go with me.
