SOME of them have batteries which extend the life of the Tablet battery, so yes it is a huge and USEFUL difference. Many don't and are merely part of the case.

The power cover keyboard charges when docked to a charging Surface, pretty neat really.

 

There were loads that were practically unusable without one, don't forget how long ago a dead man is being quoted.
