I'm in Croatia.

The best way I can describe a macchiato from here is like a cappuccino without the froth.

We filled our van with top quality French and Spanish wine last year - lasted us...errmmm... not very long...

A few unknown regions in Spain produce some cracking wines but because they aren't trendy, they're dead cheap.

The Ribero region in Galicia was particularly good - a superb white rivalling the much better known Albarino which sells for £15++ a bottle in shops here.

Not tried coffee in Starbucks for a long time as barely tasted of coffee and served in a chipped tea mug. Does amaze me that so many people walking around in the UK with an XL takeaway cup that is mostly milk or water with very little coffee.

Coffee is huge in OZ and NZ. McDonalds have their own seperate coffee shop at the fron of their stores.

We have a nice indie locally but closes at 5 and not open on sundays which is annoying.

They do that out here as well, but also have loads of cakes and pastries behind the same counter, coffee is much better too, real cups, plates and spoons no plastic or cardboard, very nice lounge type seating area too.

Apparently the flat white was invented in NZ. It was good when we were there.

Those buckets of brown water are indeed grim; proper coffee is small and strong.

Costa for me, although the scene of Costa self-serve machine at Manchester airport arrival has put me off a bit. Not coffee's fault. The users make a right mess around it, and it doesn't get cleaned very often. Bad impression on the visitors.

Hardly put you off Costa outlet though. I never buy from a machine, i'd want it for a fraction of the price if a machine was serving me.

Well it did put me off it a bit because of the look of the thrown away disposable cups all over, with the froth sticking to them. YUK! Anyway, I occasionally drink my coffee in Costa coffee bars regardless, and yes....

Coffee machines are not a good idea. I don't know why George Clooney promotes these machine made ones in that advert when a woman robs his coffee. But this machine made coffees can't be helped if you're waiting for your lift back home after being back in some hot country. You need a coffee in your hands to keep you warm. So, if the coffee machine is the only or the best option for that time, you go for it.

For tea, we have a family run organic Cibos in our neighbouring town that serves the best tea. I'm actually a tea drinker, and tbh I prefer the one I make at home myself.

I first time I had seen and experienced a flat white was in Oz, way before it ever hit the menu's here, so you're probably right.

We were in Oz in 1999 then NZ in 1999/2000 (did the Millennium NYE there) and had many so yep, it was a while ago!

Too many just do a strong latte and get it completely wrong.

When in Europe I usually just have small black coffees - milk spoils perfect coffee IMO.

I prefer a flat white to anything else if I'm in a Starbucks, and I think you're correct that it originates from NZ (someone also told me Australia).

I was in Portland, Oregon a few years ago and wandered into a Starbucks and asked for a flat white - they didn't have a clue what I was on about!
Had to Google it on my phone and show them

P.S Also a very large number of Istrian Croats in OZ, so quite possible it got there that way.

K, that sounds remarkably like the coffee I make in my La Pavoni every morning

Which I would describe as a strong Latté or more simply a cup of coffee

My steamer is great at making that thick Smooth aerated milk froth - poured over a double expresso

Do your flat whites (or macchiato - didn't realise they were the same ) come in the small size cups over there?
Whilst I like Starbucks flats, you don't get much of it and Costa flat white doesn't seem so good.
Lazy baristas also make it too hot.

If I want a bigger drink (say Starbucks normal size) I always have to have 3 shots of espresso in it.

The macchiatos I know are an espresso with a bit of cream froth scooped on top; the flat white is larger and mixed with the hot milk.

Well the ones I drink out here are exactly what you're describing but remember I said Large, there's no froth to speak of as once you do that it becomes a cappuccino which is what I always order in the UK then tell them to hold the froth back and just give me the hot milk, then they look at me all gone out.
