in this situation I'd have already sent the lad a £200 deposit and politely ask him to hang fire till I could get there, then I'd get a lift down and be driving it back at the earliest opportunity. But I guess everyones different.
Never a truer word spoken (or words)

how does the tax work then? if I agree a sale then do I have to tax it there and then in my name? or does it stay taxed until the log book is sent back..
In theory, it will be still taxed to drive home until dvla have received notification that's it's sold and refund seller from sale date. So it won't get picked up on anpr.
But I shouldn't be telling you this as its against the law, and you should tax it there and then via the ref number found on new keepers slip.

I bought a car last month and there was tax on the car which run out at the end of November, I tried to tax it online a few times but DVLA wouldn't let me tax it until the 1st of December although it was still showing up as taxed on their records so my understanding that if it's taxed then you'll be ok to drive it home, in my experience you can't seem to tax a car that's already taxed online, if it's SORN then you wont have a problem. The system hasn't been thought out very well if you ask me. Anyway that's very nice car and don't come up for sale like that often
The current owner has to apply for a refund of the tax. Until he does that the car remains taxed. So you are able to drive the car home without worry.
Insurance obviously needs sorting before you drive the car but you can get a quote before you travel. Then if you buy the car a simple phone call and payment gets it insured.

I would also add that on most policies anyone over 25 is insured third party on the sellers insurance, just depends if you want to take the chance and he is willing to let you.
Not legal, but I've done this on a couple of occasions with agreement of seller just to get me home.
Insurance are clamping down in the 25yo policy where you can drive others cars 3rd party as its a common scam used by a lot of folk with big families.
Someone coming to view a car im selling would not be covered on my insurance for instance. Only named drivers on said policy are covered to drive it surely.
A car like that and rarety value I would send £200 deposit instantly and even take a sicky off work incase I missed it amd go down within a couple of days to get it
How many cars do you ever get of this excellent condition for the age

But it does only takes a call and a credit card to get instant insurance these days and I'm sure the seller would leave the tax till the end of the month as he won't be getting a refund for that part of the month anyway.
Any how none of this matters now as I recon it's already gone, I would have been all over this like white on rice if I was in the market for one, I'm in Croatia and I'd already be sat in the car driving it back.

if you check your insurance, fully comp or not i think you'll find your not even covered 3rd party - i checked when buying a couple of times and was told i'm not covered.
viewed said cars, which i bought then rang insurance before setting off home.

i just use that day insure! if its not what i want you dont have to worry. yeah it will cost you near 50 quid but rather that than on the phone for hours or risk getting stopped for no insurance or having a accident and hurting someone
Sorry, yep you're bang on. The tax is automatically refunded once the DVLA recieve notification that the vehicle has been sold. So in theory you'll have a couple of days of tax left before the DVLA recieve the V5.
Thanks for all the comments guys so far, some good info on the whole tax situ at the moment too. Pulled her out the garage earlier on, really hope goes to a great home...
