All our engines are in fact quad cam. Stop listening to these other people. They're leading you up the wrong path. All our turbo engines are the same layout in general whether it's Turbo 2000, WRX, STI and so on.

Thanks pinhole. .

Well as sad as sounds my girl still knocking her boobies off. So got feeling the guys had fun with her. The shims are fine . She's got new tensioners and pullys. Action of plan take sump off and see what damage is. But if worst it's the pistons it's not to bad lucky the bottom end looks in tact from outside so piston hasn't gone through engine . Just bit gutted can't get her sill welded yet lol so sorry guys got to wait bit longer . I am determined to make this girl better

I does seem very likely the crank bearings have failed. Extremely common!

She runs great no miss fire no smoke nothing just a blooming stupid ticking noise which when read up could of been either 2 things shims or tensioners . But these fine so if any body any other ideas of what the ticking noise is when start her up please suggest. Theirs oil getting to both sides shims free. Plugs fine valves arnt hitting the spark plugs. So its a baffle. And the sound is like it's coming from top end not bottom very strange .

It's a big job, not possible with the engine in the car as the block halves have to be separated. As I was asking, how loud or bad is it? Does it keep doing it even when running for a while?

It's quite a loud ticking and quite fast Chris said it sounds like a faulty hydrolic lifter but these are shims on this one .

There's a few things it could be:

Sticky bucket (shim is underneath)
Loose spark plug
Noisy injector (they tick a little bit as normal)
Bad manifold gasket
Piston slap
Or indeed the big end bearings as I said already.

Can you take a video of it?

Spark plugs are brand new and fine.
Shims hubby said he can turn them free hand .

It don't sound like an injector too loud of a tick.

Has he actually measured the valve clearance? Turning the buckets by hand isn't the same as checking the shim thickness and also doesn't prove that they can slide in and out of their bore freely.

Just had a thought, this engine might not actually have shims under the buckets. I believe it was early STI engines had them, could be wrong. It still could be a bad bucket.

That's pretty serious sounding. Does sound a little different to what I've heard before coming from big end bearings admittedly but I bet that's what it is.
