Valve clearance checking is much the same on all engines with cam shafts/valve followers etc.

I think you'd better get the sump off for a look and check the big end bearings on the end of the con rods.

Easiest way to check if the big ends have gone is drop the oil through some nylon tights and if there's any metal in there then it's foobard.

As you won't get access to the crank on a flat four via the sump, engine needs to come out and split the block halves.

To be fair it doesn't sound like the big ends to me, more like top end, has he not used the old trick of a long screw driver to his ear to try and find out where it's coming from?

Right at the start there's a big end type noise and then it gets more tinny, probably due to oil pressure rising.

Yeah I heard that, not too sure what it was but just sounds a bit like it struggled to start, One thing for sure it doesn't sound good.

OP, tell him to blip the throttle to 2.5k rpm, if there is any knock as he comes off the gas it's definitely the big end, but I still think there is something else going on as well possibly with the valves, broken bent or stuck.

Personally after being stood 7yrs I would have just taken it out and stripped it anyway.

Yer but he can't hear were it's mainly coming from the noise just sounds like it's the hole engine .

can you see the numbers / letters on the underside of the turbo? may take some looking for in the daylight or with a torch.
If its been mapped then theres a couple of things to look at

First check what ECU you are running by pulling the passenger side carpet back and undoing the 4 or so 10mm bolts on the metal cover. It will be written on the unit.

Second have a look at the injectors (right hand side easiest to see) and there is a little gap where the wire connects to it. Can you tell the colour of the injector? Yellows are a common upgrade and this is likely if its had a remap although not definite.

In all fairness try and go for a complete engine and ECU together to save to hassle. That way any future mods and mapping you know about and have a good knowledge of whats going on under your bonnet. If I were you I would also fit a good clutch and flywheel whilst you change the engine for peace of mind.

Good project and good luck with it mate

The cambelt tensioners have a tendency to go and make horrible tapping noises too.
The paint still looks really matted. I'd give it a good buff with a machine polisher and it will come up bonny. As said above for the price of an interior you be as well just getting another interior instead of messing about with those leather things.

Sorry to hear about your nan, hope she gets well soon. Forget about the car and take care of the family until things settle.
