I like the idea of a mini GT-R 👍although most likely 260ish bhp and fwd. It looks like only Ford with the revo knuckles in the front of the RS can manage 300bhp+ in fwd at the moment.

VAG reliability is abysmal these days, oil pump failures on the 20vt, cam lobes wearing, camshaft to warping and turbo failures on the PD150, engines being coked up on the TFSI and FSI. There are many more examples
My Wife has a A4 Avant tdi which has done 37k miles and averages under 40mpg on a long run! Also, it was serviced 7k miles ago and I had to put a litre of oil in it as it was low, even though it's supposed to be on 20k mile intervals. However, it is very nice inside!
When the time comes to sell her car, I don't think I'll replace it with a German car, and it certainly won't be from the VAG stable

I think maybe my post has caused some confusion. The car in question is nothing like the picture I posted. I think it's just a luke warm fwd hatch.
We need Nissan to make the one I posted the picture of though! Not sure if they are considering it, but i noticed a poll on gtiroc forum about spec..
Come on Nissan, mini GTR.

I would disagree, 3 of the 4 turbo bolts on my mk2 Golf (20vt from a Seat Leon Cupra) sheared when I replace the turbo, because it broke.

I bet I could of got them out without being so ham fisted.
PD150's do on occasion munch a camshaft.- how do the 1.5 DCI Renaults (and nissans) fair up over the years?
40mpg is good from a 2 ton estate car.
Never had to replace an oil pump or chain on a 20v t unless the sump has been burst.
What would you buy then if it wasn't VAG? A nice DCI Renault?
Next you will be saying toyotas are unreliable

I don't think reliability can be quantified as easy as saying "all VAG" or "all German cars" are reliable.
Within most if not all car manufacturers you will get reliable and unreliable models.

Because turbo bolts are a good example.... Not

The MPG fiasco is now getting scathing press and the legislators are looking at the wildly inaccurate claims.
Image over substance, see the legend, buy the myth!

I know a few people with the 1.5 engine and none of them have had any problems, and to say the pd150 'on occasion' destroy a camshaft is laughable. A lot did it, luckily for VW, they were pretty much all out of the 3year warranty period.
Why would I say toyotas are unreliable, they are at, or very close to the top of reliability lists every year, they aren't German!
I wouldn't buy a french car either, not my taste. Maybe a new Jag XE or something Japanese

And under 40mpg on a run from a 2 ton??? Estate diesel car is ****.
Volkswagens reputation for bullet proof reliability is a fallacy and has been for a long time.
Where I used to work we had a touran tdi (1.9pd) and an Octavia vrs 2.0cr tdi
Both cost thousandsin repairs, esp fault and dmf on the touran, turbo fault and climate control failure on the skoda to name a few.
A mate of mine has a Passat highline thats had the common abs module fault and central locking problems, another mate that had an A4avant 2.0tdi sport line with lots of issues, another with a TT that leaked water through the windows and had loads of electrical issues, my brother had a Leon 20vt with its fair share of electrical issues, he has an Octavia vrs at the moment but has been ok so far.
My parents had a Jetta that had gearbox problems and a throttle that decided to stick wide open while I was driving it (scary!) and every one of the three volkswagens I have had have cost thousands in repairs.
I'm not saying I don't like them, I have a Volkswagen sitting in my garage at the moment, but if you believe in the old strap line 'if everything in life was as reliable as a volkswagen' you are deluded.

I'm just going by the extensive work I did on my last car.
I don't need to prove my in depth vag knowledge here.
http://uk-mkivs.net/topic/91141-mk4-4motion-20-16v-turbo-build/
As for my old Datsun, it was owned by Stephen McMullen, me and then Stephen again, them all Paton.
Stephens no longer with us, but basically he broke the engine, I bought the car and fixed it up, ran it for a bit then he bought it back, then it had a gearbox, then ally had it. I had lost interest by then

Looks like a good project, although I didn't read it all. Why did you replace the 2.8? Also, why not go down the easier, and probably cheaper route of 20vt?
I'm not slating all VAG models by the way, I'd love another mk3 Anni or mk2, or a b5 RS4, I just don't rate the new ones at all.

1.8 20v is a soulless engine and not that good for power IMO of course. Old school 16v running 2.0 bar of boost on an HX35 was good. Circa 400hp.
Golf was too heavy though
#46
I agree, my 20v had effortless power, but wasn't exciting in any way, even in a mk2 shell. I much preferred the ABF in my Anni, even though it had less power.
Anyway, depending on specs, I would prefer the Pulsar NISMO to a Golf R. The Golf looks a bit bland to me and i'll be surprised if it's as reliable as early VW's

I would love to find a mk2 Jetta syncro and turbo it, but they are rare as rocking horse **** now, I just don't buy into the vw's are reliable hype.

Synchro has o2o crumble box made into 4x4 with a viscous prop to the back.
Rallye is same as passat synchro, o2a.
4motion is o2m and Haldex- bullet proof.
My mate did a mk2 synchro with the O2m 6 speed and Haldex rear diff, 2.8 24v turbo.

There are a few (I think around 200) G60 Syncro, which are basically a rallye but in a normal shell. I sold my mk2 to buy one of only 2 known rhd from the factory versions, but the guy pulled out at the last minute

Edition one and limited are both FWD, the limited are all 5doors and have a 26v engine.

I was very surprised when one rolled up two doors down visiting one of my neighbours, so had a chat with the owner and a good look round it.
