I know, I wasn't aiming my response at John. Whats winds me up is everyone else's reaction. I just want to sell a car and it is a damn good car.

Seamus300,

That is a good price mate for the RB5, is it a WR sport ? I wouldn't worry about paint work. It can always be painted

Cheers Phill C

PS Paying a little more for my RB5 but it is a WR

I know you are angry mate, but if you read John's post he does say you are a decent chap.

Dave, I know like I said I wasn't aiming my post at John. It's just everyone else who thinks it's OK to jump in and call me a to$$er when my intentions were genuine.

This thread seems to be getting out of hand!

In my experience this happens more times than not, a seller will always make the car sound better than it is! Also you as the buyer are going to pick little points that the seller may not have noticed (eg parking dent!)
I went to see 'an immaculate example' uk turbo last march only to spend 2 hrs travelling and find the wing mirror dangling on the wires bouncing and scratching the passenger door! So really it should have been ' a tatty example thant needs attention! '

John - I find cars like women - there are loads about but when the right one comes along you just know it was meant for you! (as girlfriend sits next to me in the lounge reading what i am typing)

It took me 12 weeks to find my car last year and i probably paid too much but it is the best example in the price bracket i was looking for - MY97 R Reg PPP 32k FSSH, extended warranty £14K!!!!

Keep looking you will end up with a better car than you were expecting!

This is getting out of hand.

I can sympathise with John. He gives up his day off to travel a long way to see 2 cars, and in one way or another ways is let down (in his opinion) by both.

But what if "The Seller's" car turned out to be not quite what John expected? As with Seamus's car? From any sellers point of view, an appointment to view does NOT mean a guaranteed sale. "The Seller" could have turned away full asking in his hand, and John may not have been willing to match the price, or wish to buy anyway. What then?

To start slagging off the sellers, calling them asses and idiots is plain ludicrous. Selling privately is a tricky business: for every genuine caller you recieve, there are usually 10 timewasters. If my car is for sale (always), and someone called John Felstead rings, could it be John Felstead the genuine buyer with cash in his pocket, or John Felstead the complete timewaster who tells me he is on his way, but has no intention of turning up? I have had both, many times. These people do exist.

Either way it looks like a no-brainer to me. Unfortunately, that's life. Slagging off Seamus or The Seller will not make things better.

Unhappy

Like I said, I was very disappointed with the RB5 because it wasn’t as described. I also even went to the trouble of saying that the owner probably didn’t realise his FSSH was in fact screwed up. I didn’t mention the sellers name on purpose because I didn’t want to jeopardise their sale and maybe the next person who enquired could have been given the correct information so wouldn’t feel disappointed.

As to the MY00 seller, well what can I say? I sent this guy 13 mails and had two telephone conversations. I was about as clear as you can be that I wanted to buy his car. I wouldn’t have travelled 250 miles knowing that someone else was going to look at the car two hours before me because it was a cracking car and would sell to the first person to view it. I did a lot of research on this and talked to people who knew the car. I have every right to feel aggrieved by what happened.

I even sold my Sport well under my asking price so I would have the money; I am down about £1100 now. I knew the car wasn’t a dog, even if it was then I would have taken that on the chin as that was my risk and I decided to take it, what I cant accept as OK is being treated like a moron, he knew I was travelling 250 miles on a Bank Holiday and he didn’t give a ****, that’s what really pissed me off most.

And yes, I asked the guy to let me view it as I was 200 miles into my journey, he shouldn’t have accepted the cash, he should have kept his word and let me make an offer. Looking back now I know I was wasting my breath but I was seriously gob smacked to be treated like **** by someone who knew what my intentions were.

Like I said, Sean's RB5 is not a bad car, far from it. It just wasn’t what I expected and that was a disappointment.

John, you could probably tell by the look on my face that I wasn't aware the SH was not quite right, I will be having words with Mr Main Dealer on Wednesday. I still think the price we spoke about on e-mail was fair though however I understand why you're not interested. No hard feelings on my part and it still is a damn fine car.

Would of been a slightly different story if you had of arrived first Im sure John...Would you of waited for another buyer to arrive and make an offer?

I had this happen to me once, as a buyer showed up and was so keen he offered over the asking price, and even left me a replacement car of his own so that he could depart with my car straight away.
In this situation the other buyer on his way wasnt that happy either, but I wasnt about to pass it up...As im sure most on here wouldnt either.

Its unfortunate this kind of thing happens.

Is it just me, or are those imperfections hard to find in the photos???

absolutely sean, the car is worth the money, i have been saying all the time that it isnt a bad car, (and i think you are a genuine guy) it's just not the car i wanted as i was after a FSSH car so i could extend the waranty. I cant do that on yours as it isnt FSSH and IM stipulate it has to have the book fully stamped. I extended my waranty on the sport for the same reason as i cant afford to have the car not covered unless i bought a much cheaper car and kept the rest in the bank. It's nothing against the car, it's just what i have to have behind me.

The reason i am upset bruiser is that i was not dealt with honestly, i personally wouldnt dream of not telling a buyer they had someone as a rival and they would be ariving before, especially so when the person has to travel 250 miles! If the guy had told me the truth i would have made 100% certain i wasnt about to waste a few weeks worth of effort over 1 1/2 hours of getting there earlier.

When i rang the guy on wednesday to see if we could meet mid week, as i was anxious to buy the thing, and we realised it was just imposible, he didnt say a word about anyone else seeing the car Saturday morning and we agreed a time that suited him after me agreeing to not meet him the week before, just the night before that was due. I had aranged to meet him at the scoobynet karting event and chased him the night before to double check only to be told he couldnt make it. The effort i put into this purchase was about as much as you could so i expected to be treated with some respect. Saying sorry after i have done all this, been totally flexible and then been screwed over doesnt wash.

Can we see why the dealers charge a premium now for their forecourt models? A few extra quid saves a lot of fannying about and you get to see a few different specimens together for comparison. They may even slip the Dent Master £40 to fix up some of the scratches and parking dings. If a bargain in the private add's looks too good to be true 99.99% of the time it will be. Anyway dodgy dealers get the newspapers and trader magasines at about 5.30am on the day they come out to snap up any genuine underpriced examples before we've even got out of 'kin bed IMHO.

Still don't get this "scratch and dink" thing. You're looking at a car that is, what, three years old? It's bound to have scratches and dinks in it. In Seamus's pictures the scratch on the back bumper is just a small one, I can't see the one on the front bumper and the dink in the side is tiny

Carl,

You make a valid point re scratches & dinks. They are a fact of life with any car these days unless you buy from a dealer and sit on them to sort these items out.

My car gets washed, polished & hoovered by me once a week, no matter what the weather, sometimes more (its sad I know, the neighbours think I've lost the plot). Servicing has always taken place ahead of schedule, and by no one else but my main dealer.

The car is my money and pride & joy so I look after it. Guess what, it has stone chips & dinks that totally p$$$ me off!

If I was keeping the car I would get one of these bodywork magicians to sort it out, knowing full well that by the next week there would be more chips & dinks. If some toerag decides to drive through a shedload of stone chippings doing 60mph when the limit is 20, and you get showered in cr4p, there is nowt you can do about it.

IMHO the key issues should be about service history, that the car is mechanically excellent (ok will not do), all bills and receipts for items spent on the car are available, evidence is available that shows the car is owned by a mechanically sympathetic enthusiast, that it's genuine (not 2 halves joined up and not stolen).

Stone chips & dinks are annoying but they are a fact of life in a private sale.

No offence to John, just giving a different point of view.

No Offence Taken WB, i understand what your point is about the car having dings etc, yes that is expected (especially on a scoob!), i was more perturbed by the fact i wasnt expecting that based on the description, the main issue on that car for me was the service though, and like i said, Sean didnt realise that which is why i keep saying he is a good bloke!! He wasnt trying to rip me off!

You have to apreciate that when i posted this i was just sharing an experience with people and did not mention any names. I did that on purpose, i was incredibly upset about the MY00 issue and was just telling things how i saw them. I still feel strongly about that!

If anything, it may be a good experience for people to read from as i know i have learned a lot this weekend about buying cars and what can happen. I tend to expect total honesty and correct facts from people because thats what i always try and achieve myself, maybe i take these things more seriously than most?

The RB5 i looked at in Mansfield is a very nice car (thanks lee!), almost 100% mint bodywork wise. It has 51K miles which was higher than i wanted. It does have a PPP upgrade that was done 12 months ago. I managed to get the dealer to accept £14,995 for it including a new tracker, full service, 12 months MOT, new headlight where it was stonechiped plus remove one dent in the door. I was due to test drive it tuesday (today now ) and give a decision but i will cancel that now as i have found a car that meets my needs perfectly.

I have just bought an STi5 Type RA. My insurance is going to be a killer, but after totalling my westie and then having a seriously **** weekend in the main, i thought what the hell, I need cheering up, you only live once. Looks like you were right Paul!

OK, where's my bed, i am knackered. My *** is square from all the driving too.

Congratulations John, seriously pleased that you are sorted at last. You may be right re the insurance but what the hell, life is for living.

Besides every time you step into the car you won't even think about it as you will (should) be grinning to much.

Enjoy & congratulations

Poor show indeed.

However, don't despair. I bought a car (MY00) from a Scoobynet regular (big thanx to the_gza and espesh to Gammon Roll for showing me the light!) and thankfully the car was as he described it.
My time wasn't wasted and I had an extremely good weekend taking her up North for a run after we xchanged cash for car.

I hope something turns up soon for you m8 and the next guy doesn't take the p*ss.

It's a shame there's no way to vet adverts, but we're all 'netters here so I would hope there's some "honour amongst Scoobs"

Stay Frosty

Soz, just seen the pics of the RB5 (missed a page of threads, D'oh!)
The car I bought also had some chips on the bonnet and front bumper and a scratch on the boot too. I agree with previous comments, I'd expect some minor "damage" on a Scooby over a year/ 18months old, these things are bound to happen, malicious or otherwise.
But I felt that the rest of the cars condition and history outweighed these. I'm getting a local guy to fix up the paintwork back to it's former glory.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that's it's all down to personal preference. I've waited a long time myself till something special came along and this car was it.

Top motor John, looks like all the hassle may of paif off.
STi V is Certainly in my Shopping list once my Sharesave Scheme matures.

P.S Whats the difference between an STi V RA and standard STi, I thought RA's were all White and without Electical Goodies.

The main diference on the STi RA and a standard STi is the gearing is lower, (the typeR has lower gearing than a standard STi, the RA is even lower than the TypeR, it is the fastest accelerating scoob you can buy but it revs higher on motorways so if you do a lot of motorway driving, it's probably not for you) it has the roof vent , It has the centre diff control, Water sprays for the intercooler (i think some STi's had this anyway), 2 pot rear calipers, No ABS, No Electric windows, No Aircon, No radio. It also has the quickrack, not sure if all STi's get that?

Most of the speced new for the road cars had the Air Con, Electric windows and Radio fitted as an optional extra at the factory. The car i bought was bought brand new for import and has all the options.

You could buy a WRX Type RA (non STi) that has a lower powered engine than the WRX STi Type RA and no rear wing, it was lighter weight with a crap interior. This was the car designed for striping and using as a rally car base.

Cheers John, might be tempted by an RA then if I can find one with the Electrics, althought the gearing may be a concern for motorway driving (even tho' we havn't got any in Sussex).

Although I've probably got to wait 4-12 months depending on my shares.

My MY94 Prodrive Edition will have to suffice until then....

John,

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but what you seem to have bought is a Subaru Impreza Sti V RA V-Limited Does it have nice bright blue seats and a titanium gear ****?

The standard RA V-lim. is based on the 4 door 'ready to rally if you slap in a cage and some seats' RA shell (the roof vent was a delete option)
It came with all the usual Sti driver toys but without a radio head unit???
It has effectively the 2 door Type R running gear ie adjustable centre diff (no abs), gearbox ratios, engine and the i/c water spray!
The best bit though is the steering rack which as you have twigged is the lovely quick ratio 22b rack, and this was only fitted on the model you have bought and the 22b, not the 2 door Sti V Type R V-Limited like Matt had!
The car also came with 2 gear *****, the standard red stiched Sti unit and a light weight lead filled titanium 'piston' shaped one which was almost always half inched on the ship while the cars were coming to the uk

That my friend is the ultimate 4 door scoob, one below a 22B in my book I so nearly bought one a few years ago, no need now...

although I'd worry if you see me hovering near your car with spanners in my hand...

I'll have that steering rack off and away if your not carefull

See every cloud has a silver lining...mutter...mutter...
