The type r isn't a lightweight edition, infact it's one of the heaviest versions of a classic impreza.
its just an STI, minus 2 doors and given a close ratio box.
Genuine question... What is it that makes the Type R heavy?
Gearbox/dccd (not all RA's have it) electric windows, aircon, stereo system, central locking, big *** boot spoiler, rear wiper and motor, mine has all of the above so it's the subaru "full phat" version 3, some of the later ones have airbags too.

Does sound like HG. Looks like a mint car though.
Head gasket can be done for £500 though so if that was built into
the price it would still be a good car

Heads skimmed, new head gaskets and timing belt kit.
Do the work yourself.
How much do people charge to do a head gasket?
I'd imagine a lot more, never had a quote myself. But iirc it'd be a good idea to change the shells as water can effect them, which would mean full strip, new gaskets/block bolts/deck face/head skim. Then as the head has been skimmed you'd have to work out the compression ratio and fit suitable gaskets. If you're going that far is it worth forging? ARP head studs? the list goes on.
You'd probably be better off just going for a second hand engine.
