I was thinking of a way to make the car rev faster without changing my long ratios. I'm probably changing into 3rd at just over 60mph and that's great, but 3rd and 4th are just a little too long though and rpm pick up is slow.

Is it low lift cams that will chop my 150mph top speed down to 120mph for instance but I'll get there a lot quicker?

No, the cams are in the complete wrong area of the engine to have any bearing on your top speed etc.

You want a short ratiogearbox and a lightweight fflywheel to make it rev faster etc

Toyed with the idea of slightly lighter flywheel. Think 8kg would be a good compromise if such a weight is available. Can the standard flywheel skimmed to any chosen weight?

What golf matt ?
I'm currently building a mk4 anniversary which, when mapped will be over 300bhp and lots of torque.
Will be at york raceway when done with some serious tyres on the front though

Some interesting times on this site:

http://www.type-ra.com/subaru-forum/...e-table.11569/

420 bhp Spec C running 12.9 and 350 bhp Spec C running 13.6, three classics ranging from 350-477bhp running mid 12's.

I've just had a Perrin lightweight crank pulley fitted and along with some better tyres for next summer I should be safely beyond their times. Perrin claim 10hp extra at the wheels but I'm a bit dubious to the claim. 4lb saving is still 0.4 bhp though!

Interesting post made by a guy who ran a 5 speed then a 6 speed and his times drastically decreased. Probably why I keep seeing Newage STI's posting the same times as WRX's that are 50-100bhp less powerful. Just goes to show there's no need for a 6 speed box when a 350bhp Newage WRX can match a 450bhp STI.

Looks too sexy to waste on a car btw!

Try putting the driver of the 350bhp wrx in the 450bhp sti and vice versa and im sure the results would be very different

There's not a cat in hells chance a 350bhp wrx is going to beat a 450bhp Sti. It would get smashed. As above use a like for like driver

If I drove a 450bhp STI, I'd launch at 6k, spin like crazy whilst hitting the limiter badly in the 1st 3 gears.

An STI driver will launch a 350bhp WRX at little lower I guess and bog down, he'll change too early throughout.

I guess both cars will run around 13.3 and after a few runs both mid 12's capable

Match, not beat!

I know it's all casual banter but I've been around drag racing long enough to know otherwise. I've even been to the drag races with a lad in a 420bhp STI and he struggled to break the 12's, went another time with a lad in a 540 bhp STI and he only managed 12.36!!! The times postedon type-ra.com back it up further (My 333bhp WRX 12.6 - 420bhp Spec C 12.9) I expect a 420bhp spec C is the equivalent of a full fat 450bhp UK Newage. I won't profess to being a better driver than someone with a 420bhp Spec C and a lot better driver than someone with a 13.6 350bhp Spec C. My casual launching has been criticised enough!

All those STI fan boys claiming the STI is better due to the gearbox, sure the gearbox is stronger but it ends there, at the levels where strength is needed a performance 5 speed is more preferable for drag racing anyway. I can imagine going past 450bhp in a bid to leave a 350bhp WRX is going to give you real problems getting the power down on those incredibly short ratios.

Is it advisable to forge a Newage STI at 400bhp or 450bhp? It's gonna cost an STI owner an absolute fortune to beat a WRX on the drag strip!

Obviously on the track it's a different ball game as the STI will rarely see 1st or 2nd and has better brakes/reliability. So both great cars considering.

http://www.dragtimes.com/Subaru-Impr...lip-14064.html

400bhp Blobeye STI 12.74

Thats 70 bhp more than mine and a slightly slower ET so another 30bhp should see him just about pass my time.

http://www.dragtimes.com/Subaru-Impr...lip-13104.html

Bug 340 bhp WRX matching my time of 12.6

I constantly see the same pattern from going to the drag races, watching them on youtube and viewing timeslips online!!!

It's incontrovertible. Depending on power levels the 6 speed is like a 50-100bhp burden to the STI.

http://www.dragtimes.com/Subaru-Impr...lip-12453.html

Another 425bhp STI Blobeye running a 12.6!

90bhp more than mine with an extra 140lbs of torque!!!

Same ****ing time as my Blob WRX!!! And I should have run even faster than his if I hadn't parked in a bog before my all or nothing run.

2006 Hawk STI 13.13

Additional parts, modifications, upgrades & information:
(0-60, weight, upgrades parts, etc...)
reaction time was awful. almost a half second late. car is capable of 12.6-12.7. had some wheel spin with all the sessions
Yes mate, 12.6 if you had the WRX 5 speed or equivalent!!!

Hawk STI 370/385 - 13.16

Hand on heart think I could push mid 11's with that power in a WRX and I openly admit to being an average driver.

I forget who said it, might have been Yoda. "Power is nothing without control"

Power difference of 100bhp isn't going to help the person in the higher powered car much if they aren't good/experienced at racing.

I raced my mate at SSO, he was in a 440BHP 2.5l type R. Raced him 8 or 9 times, not once did he beat me across the line. IIRC he never beat my time in a head to head race, either. I know he never beat my best time on the day as he finished 3rd in class, and I was 2nd.

Same day I raced Andy F in his circa 450BHP, 2.5l bugeye. Left me standing and well and truly kicked my ****.

I didn't destroy him. His headlight was alongside my drivers door over the line. If he had have been better at drag racing, he would have won. Steve is a friend, he lives local to me, I'll never let him forget it though.

Steve was running around 450-500, at a guess. 2.5l, GT35R IIRC.

Is that the bug that has 477bhp and is still on the TMIC? Even though the TMIC is only good for 400 lol. Knowing AF it'll have around 580lbft

I just can't find info of a Newage STI matching our times with similar power.

What was your time when you beat him?

A lad based up your end with a 2005 Black STI came to mine the other day, told me he wrote a WR1 off at the impressive speed of 30mph.

Good job he didn't have a WRX he might have done more damage at 40mph.

Lol at the WRX owner who can't understand why his car is matching or beating the times of lighter and or more powerful STI's.

Powerful STI's below consistently posting disappointing times, the WRX is incontrovertibly a far faster accelerating car - Evo magazine test:

437/390 RCM Bug 12.5
333/307 RS_Matt's WRX 12.6
400/360 Gforce 3 12.7
350/356 2005 Type 25 12.8

305/298 MY04 STI PPP 13.7s - Subaru claim 13.4 lol.
316/310 WR1 13.7s

RCM Bugeye - 12.5 secs 437bhp 390lbft
My knacked WRX with mud in the budget tyres and an SN criticised launch - 12.6 sec 333bhp 307lbft
