No mate not a computer man for work but I do have to use them a bit to do certain things. The mapping took me a while to understand as well but once I knew how the engine components worked such as the boost solenoid etc I found it ok. You really need a wideband sensor fitted to self map and some form of detcans to listen i the engine. Both of these are a must! Without them you've no idea what the AFR's are and if you have knock/det happening.
Also, as Andy will back up, any data in the tables displayed on the map is converted data from raw units and as such can't be treated as gospel. The ECU will do its best to achieve the values you program it to do but you'll find the AFRs for example will be off a bit compared to the wideband readings.

im a landscape gardener, only use a pc to come on here a ebay lol i got a wideband and lamba just need another boss putting in the down pipe to fit it, ive got a electrolink knock link setup up aswell or will that not be enough, think for now il get intouch with esl and send in the ecus and get the board in mine a reset to 1s, say for example if i came to your car over night and swapped your turbo , how much of the map would you have to change,

I don't think I'd rely on the knock link for mapping. Try to get the wide band fitted before you start changing the map. More boost will create knock at some stage. Our cars run pretty rich as standard so there's room for a little more boost without changing anything.
If we changed my turbo from a TD04 to something bigger like a TD05 that spools a little later but can provide more air at higher rpm, we'd have to alter the fuel map to lean out the rpms where the early boost from the td04 would have been and then enrich the fuel map where the TD05 is making boost where the TD04 would have died off. The boost control solenoid map would most likely need altered to suit the later spool too.

When I went esl on my current v3 type r I started with the oe base map and read up and educated myself on the software and settings before changing anything. You need to make small, and I mean small, changes and then log data to see the results. I mainly changed the fuelling, base ign map and the boost control tables. The main maps have been changed to allow for the higher loads and the resolution changed to be able to add detail where needed. Yes, it gets a bit confusing but as long as its small steps that are monitored and logged, then damaging anything shouldn't happen. If you go at it like a bull in a china shop then expect problems.
As an amateur mapper I have spent hours and hours over the past years pratting about for only small gains on minor mods. The pro mappers must have invested 100x the time and effort I have to achieve their ability. That's what you are paying for. Don't expect many pros to be on here dishing out advice as its difficult to do on a forum when not knowing all the details of someone else's car and they haven't spent all that time perfecting their trade and knowledge to just give it away for free.
There are quite a few people on here that help self mapped their own cars that are willing the help where they can.
So my advice is have it mapped professionally then think about wether or not you want to teach yourself how to do it. If you do, buy the software and cable and go from there.

Mine is now running sweet at 1.35 bar tailing off to 1.15 at the top. No det and a reasonably safe afr of 11.2 ish. Its taken a while to map as I only have an hour or so each week to play. I always log and then digest the data later.

Im thinking next for Andy to develop would be a small device you can attach permanantly to the car and at the flick of a switch it can log data when needed.
Reason i suggest this, mapping our cars is cool, but unless a rolling road is available we dont always have the road/scenario to test certain things, so unless a laptop is in the car permamntly and you could fire it up, hook it up, run the software, set a log going all whilst driving a little data logger would be ideal lol :-)

ive got a laptop dedicated for mapping, what i mean is, its not powered on, connected and logging all the time, so, say, if a split moment comes along where you can test something,a nice piece of road etc, if a dongle type device, say a raspberry pi type device was connected and you just flicked a switch, it powered on and boom, instant logging.

That would be handy. I could log basic stuff instantly with my ZT-2 wideband controller like boost, AFR, exhaust temp, fuel pressure etc. I just need the extra hardware for it though!

I had my ESL fitted and mapped by Duncan @ Racedynamix, he came out to my house removed my old ECU and fitted a new one with ESL board already installed.
We jumped in the car and completed a live mapping session.
all this took 90 minutes and cost me £575.00
cant fault it, runs like a proper monster now.....lovin it

I know that includes the cost of the ESL board, but, frankly.
90 minutes to fully map a car is just guessing. Yeah, all mappers will have base maps; hopefully ones they have created themselves; even so 45 minutes per full map on a twin map board.

Im goimg to put myself out there and say that, i dont think that this is the 1st ESL map that he has done with more than some success!!
If he has created custom maps for 000's of ESL's with similar mods as mine then im sure that 90 minutes is more than enough time to get the right results!
As i stated, she pulls like a train and sounds sweet too
