It would make sense no? That would mean the belt hasn't been spinning for the alternator to charge battery which would explain the dead battery??????

If you put it in gear, can you move it backwards and forwards (by pushing it, obviously)?

Does it freewheel OK? As in, if you press the clutch down, can you easily move the car around (again, by pushing)?

Take the belt off tha ac unit, if the engines failing to turn over even with a jump, I doubt it's anything to do with alternator.

Have you tried to manually turn the engine, either by putting a socket on crank pulley, or rocking car back and forward whilst in gear?

I'd take the all cam covers off and check timing is still correct, may have slipped/jumped.

When you got the AA on it, did they not plug it in for a diagnostic check? As you mentioned that the CEL light came on then a fault would of been registered for someone to check and not for them to make assumptions as to what it could be

I had a look, just for curiosity's sake. It appears there was an engine failure, not sure exactly what.

I could work it out as I left Essex 25 years ago , and as the car is probably still there we could fix it.
