The only thing stopping you is you. That's what's bloody hilarious.
I don't think I've ever met an Apple user that WON'T use Windows, I use Windows when I have to, I generally come on here after I've accomplished my task and remind everyone how **** it is, but I use it and I get the job done. Windows/Android users that WON'T use anything Apple are everywhere, it's the biggest joke in Computing.

Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha. You have two options. Don't run Find my iPhone or Try to install it using iTunes, seriously, that's it. Stop being angry, pick one and move along.

As for downloading the older version, I've just downloaded iBooks from the app store onto an iPad running iOS 5. When I clicked download I was given the option to download the last compatible version as the current version isn't compatible with that device. So it can be done and it's dead easy.

Thanks for the suggestion ... but I've failed on point 1.
I won't install iTunes ... not a chance am I putting any of that **** anywhere near my PC
I've got a phone that can use a wireless connection to my router if it needs to. It has no business or need to go anywhere even close to my computer.
*tinfoil hat.

Yes, you have a phone you can connect to WiFi, but as I explained, in detail, for this particular situation, if it works that is, you *need* to use iTunes on a computer. In addition, sometimes it is actually a good thing to have the phone connected up, full backups being one reason (iCloud backup does not back up absolutely everything).

I'd hold off 8.0.2, simply because 8.1 is likely to appear within the next week (event on 16th, and seems that some places are gearing up for a go-live of Apple Pay on the 18th, and it's going to be 8.1 that has Apple Pay enabled), just saves doing two updates.
One hopes 8.1 will also address the space requirement issue which seems to be one of the two reasons people are holding off upgrading to 8.x
From memory, 8.1 fixes a bluetooth issue in 8.0.x, will introduce Apple Pay, and there are a couple of other fixes, that I cannot recall right now (not actually read the dev notes for 8.1, nor installed the beta versions, way to much going on right now!)

I never said it was. What I said was your iPhone maybe unable to run ios8 because the hardware isn't up to it. So in a round about way it's a hardware issue.

If you don't already have the app in your purchase history then you HAVE to use the workaround I suggested, there isn't as far as I'm aware, ANY other way to get a previous version of the app via the App Store.
If you were able to, you could be sneaky and use an enterprise account to sign an old version of the app and host the .ipa file somewhere and point people at that. Enterprise signing basically removes the 100 device limit that applies in a normal development environment. However, I suspect Apple would take a dim view of this and if you have a live app on the store, I could see them revoking your dev account, thus no apps any more, and good luck trying to get things reinstated.

Answer provided, YOU don't want to install something that could resolve your problem because you're being pig headed about it for some reason. Guess what, tough bloody luck, no Find my iPhone for you. Moan all you want about it and how **** iTunes and Apple are, and how you should be able to do what you want, blah, blah, blah.
I am sick and ******* tired of giving over my time to provide advice and then practically having it thrown back in my face. I really do wonder why I still bother to respond on here when you get crap like this. More fool me for trying to help out I suppose.

Phone / PC. Different things. I do not *need* to, and will not. install iTunes on my PC to operate or manage a f*cking phone. It's a phone. A PHONE god damnit. Can you imagine buying a car but you NEED to have the manufacture software installed on your computer and you have to connect them up every so often otherwise you can't open the boot or turn the headlights on or suddenly the Aircon won't work anymore because there's a new ECU upgrade?

Maybe that's the bit you don't understand, installing Find My iPhone on your 3GS, a fine device in its day, is not possible. There are ways you can install it - or maybe not? - but those are Special ways. You should consider a Mac, it does Special things really well.

It isn't obsolete, you can still make and receive calls and texts, but the OS was end of life when IOS7 was released.
Same thing happens with software, something reaching the EOL does not make people stop using it, just means there will be no more updates to it.
Making a software application backwards compatible is very difficult and most developers tend to only support 1 major version for that reason.
Find My iPhone authors have opted to make the app ios8 only, thats up to them. Each iteration of IOS is a new version of the API. To support iso 6,7 and 8 would be 3 API's thats 3 lots of code to look after, soon becomes a headache.
