Am I the only one that fails to see the point of having the find my iphone app on the phone itself?
Unless of course you're using it to keep tabs on someone elses iphone?
Actually that's very, very true. The app is for finding other people's iPhones, you can use iCloud.com probably from Safari on the 3GS. LOL.
In other news I just answered a telephone call on my 6+, pretty normal eh? Until you know that my iPhone 6+ does not have a SIM card!! Nice Apple, nice.
Phone / PC. Different things. I do not *need* to, and will not. install iTunes on my PC to operate or manage a f*cking phone. It's a phone. A PHONE god damnit. Can you imagine buying a car but you NEED to have the manufacture software installed on your computer and you have to connect them up every so often otherwise you can't open the boot or turn the headlights on or suddenly the Aircon won't work anymore because there's a new ECU upgrade?
No, its an electronic device which is capable of receiving information in a particular form and of performing a sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions (program) to produce a result in the form of information or signals, that just happens to be able to make and receive telephone calls.
You don't just fix cars these days just with spanners. You plug them into diagniostic electronic device which is capable of receiving information in a particular form and of performing a sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions (program) to produce a result in the form of information or signals.
Dealerships need to have exactly what you describe.
The ONLY difference with your Iphone is that rather than having to go to a dealership for upgrades and fixes, Apple lets you have the software for free.
No, because I've not been able to install the app to find out how it works.
So you've had a two page rant about not being able to install something on your phone that you don't actually need to install. At all. And by not being able to do something you don't actually need to do that's somehow Apple's fault?
You don't need to install the app to find out how it works
In "settings" on your phone turn on "find my iphone" and set it up as you prefer.
When you lose your phone login anywhere to www.icloud.com with your apple id and click on the "find my iphone" icon.
You'll then be shown a map with an indication of where your phone is, and have options to play a sound, lock the phone or completely erase it.

Any indication of when 8.1 will appear? My 5 is still reall laggy
8.1 installed and the phone feels like it's back to IOS 7
Camera roll is back and my phone has jumped from 200mb of free space to 4gb?????? What's all that about?

I bet if you had looked at the phone in iTunes before upgrading then there would have been a fair chunk of space listed under the "Other" category. There have been questions as to what is in that category, personally I'd guess it's part of an OS update sitting around and not being deleted.
This could also account for the situation many found themselves in with iOS 8, that it required a shed load of free space (5 - 6 GB) to install, and this "other" category could have gobbled up some of that space that could have prevented people from installing the OTA version of 8.x
I took the plunge and whacked 8.1 on my plus, and it seems ok. Had a look at Apple Pay, cannot use it properly due to my card not being recognized by the system, but the visuals of it picking up the card number and name on the card is pretty nice (If you want to even see the option to add CC's, then go into Settings -> General -> Language & Region, and change the Region to United States, then quit Settings app and launch Passbook - I think you'll also need a 6, 6 Plus or one of the new iPads too)
